Sky is the limit for Tide's newest commit
Xzavier Dickson
Xzavier Dickson grew up dreaming of someday playing for the Georgia Bulldogs. But hard work and persistence by the Alabama coaches turned the 6-2½, 262-pound Dickson to the Tide. The Griffin , GA standout linebacker/defensive end made his decision public last night during the Under Armour All-American Game in St. Petersburg , FL.
"He wanted to go to Georgia as a kid," says Griffin head coach Steve DeVoursney, "but in the end, Alabama did the best job of recruiting him. They offered him first. They got in on him early and they did a good job of making sure he came to their camps. They were head and shoulders above Georgia in those aspects. Plus, with the product Alabama puts on the field, they have a great program."
Dickson is a two-time All-State selection in Georgia . He finished this year with 19 sacks. In the Under Armour game he had a couple of sacks and several quarterback pressures.
"Obviously, he can rush the passer," DeVoursney says. "He's just a big, athletic kid who has a lot of room for improvement. He's going to get faster, bigger and stronger over there in their weight program. The sky is the limit for him. He's got the potential to be a first round draft pick if he continues to get better."
Dickson is expected to start his Alabama career at linebacker.
"I think their first thought is to play him at the Jack linebacker," DeVoursney says. "But they have some of those guys coming back, so they're talking about starting him off at the Sam linebacker, the other outside linebacker position in their defense. Of course, he could beef up and become a defensive lineman, but right now the plans are to play him at outside linebacker in their 3-4 scheme."
Dickson's choices came down to Alabama and Georgia . He's already made official visits to both of those schools and he might take other visits, possibly including one to Auburn .
"I don't know if he's taking a visit to Auburn or not," DeVoursney says. "They want him to take a visit. I think he told them that if something happened that he wasn't happy with his commitment that he might take a visit. He might take the visit anyway, but I think he's pretty solid with his commitment to Alabama . I think he's pretty happy with his choice right now."
As for now, Dickson will focus on academics.
"He's not qualified yet, but he's close," DeVoursney says. "He's got another semester and he's got a few more opportunities on the test. He should make it."
Dickson runs a 4.75 40.
