Reflecting on Change

RabunDog good point on the "Dream Team". That chatter began with the coaching staff, Richt was the starting point, I think.

To me that was more of a promise than loosely parting the lips and giving coach speak. I took it to heart, and as many know on this board, all haven't been solid in Richt's corner, before or after the "promise".

The coming season will not allow coaching miscues that in my opinion have plagued us in the last few years. Not just on the field, allowing or not being aware of off field escapades also. Maybe we sign Drew and he becomes a force for good with the players. Watching Drew's video clips leaves no doubt that while being a solid Christian, he will GATA.

Thanks for the kind words DawgnLA. Agree with your speaking in tongue (oboe) :) Went into the crypto shack and de-coded the meaning. :)

I sincerely hope that the coaching team surprises all of us and hit the jackpot all around. Lots of talent on campus, never hurts to keep the cupboards full.

Agree that this years recruiting class needs to be extraordinary. We all know that if the different coaches get their "dream players" UGA could find its way back quickly.

CL said last weekend that this class will surprise many.

Guess that I am out of the loop, do think that anyone making this kind of money should have a great recruiting year, next year, and a better regular season won/loss record that reflects receiving over 2 mil near 3 mil. Showtime. That kind of money demands better control of the UGA football program.

I hope that all UGA fans and Alumni keep the heat on the coaching staff. In my opinion, they have had much too long to get things right. Understand that the D side has changed a bit, but there are others that have been there and are now gone that were under the present head coach. All of this comes under Richt's watch.

Mark Richt is the fourth-highest paid football coach in the SEC, and ninth in the country, according to USA Today’s annual compilation.

Richt’s annual compensation package is a little more than $2.937 million, behind only Alabama’s Nick Saban, Florida’s Urban Meyer and LSU’s Les Miles.

I think I have beaten the coaching thing enough, but Buc is right we should expect more.

I still think Richts all 'round good guy and favorite holy man status muddles the picture and the views of some fans. He is not paid to be a youth group leader. He is paid to win football games.

And Richt should be paid less that Saban, Miles and Meyer since they have won titles. On the Meyer front that reminds me I am going to have to retire from this web site. I need to focus on my mistress and my collection of non-running Italian cars and my Lava lamp collection.

I really appreciate all the support you guys have given me and I will miss you dearly.

Ok............I am back.

Been reflecting on the tenure of CUM and the rise of UF as a dominant fixture in our eastern conference. There was a time, when trekking to JAX for the WLOCP was a party that often fell in our favor. I recall days of yore, when fraternity bothers rallied their funds to rent a beat up Coachmen and spent 3 glorious, alcohol saturated days parked just off the Landing. That was the weekend that Worley and Henderson spoiled UF's title run and we flooded the field, tearing up chunks of turf...memories!!!

...But as the 80's turned to the 90's, and Dooley to Goff, our day's in the victory circle faded...I've been back the Jax several more times since receiving my pigskin, but never again as a victor. Goff became Donnan, then Richt, Spurrier became Zook, then Meyer and the only constant is UF's continued dominance in the east and particularly over UGA.

I found this thread posted on another site. DawgFromRockmart pens an interesting contrast between programs that not only helps explain the division between the "naysayers" and "sunshine pumpers", but who and what we (UGA) are, as compared to other rival programs....

*************************************************************************************

These thoughts reveal to me a big difference in our prorgram and Florida's....

....Most of the people I talk to and most of the opinions I've read from Dawg fans, all agree that the next UF coach will not miss a beat and UF will continue competing for SEC and national titles. Now, at UGA, we just hope our defense gets better and our OC doesn't screw up, and our team doesn't all go to jail, and we all say that 10 wins will be a success.

Some say 8 wins will keep CMR's job as long as we show "improvement". While we are busy working on a 5-10 yr plan to hopefully get back to the SEC title, UF is reloading with a brand new coach that will jumpstart recruiting and continue dominating us. All the while, we just hope we show improvement on an 8 win season.....

That's why they will keep dominating us. Our leadership establishes a mindset that we don't demand excellence. If the prez and AD don't demand excellence, how can our coaches convince the players and recruits that we demand excellence. Gimme a freaking break. The right coach could come in here next yr and win the SEC title with our roster. Call it being negative, call it what you want. I'm just tired of all the useless excuses about how our coach was good half a decade ago, etc.

Let me remind you...CMR's best team in 2002 laid an egg to a 1st yr UF coach that got fired 2 yrs later for losing to UGA once out of 3 tries and not winning a east title in 3 yrs. In 2004, another very good football team, lost to an outmanned UT team with a horrid QB which screwed us out of a SEC title chance. In 2005, we laid an egg to UF AGAIN, and BLEW UP on a 4th a long to an outmanned Auburn team to lose a massive game that knocked us out of any national title hopes. 2006 we lost to UK AND Vandy in the same yr (UT hasn't lost to UK in like 26 yrs) and has lost to Vandy like once in thousands of yrs. Spurrier has lost to UK 1 time in his entire 20+ yr career. CMR lost to them twice in 4 yrs. 2007, we got annihilated by a bad UT team and got embarrassed at home by an even worse SC team. Win 1 of those games are we likely play for a national title. Yep...more excuses. 2008 was arguably the strongest roster in the country and we lost 3 times and got embarrassed at home (The Blackout Embarassment). 2009....what can I say? 2010....even worse. What does 2011 hold in store?????

****************************************************************************************

Those are the stark realities of our current path. Since the days of Dooley, when UGA sought change, it rarely resulted in the same, sustained and progressive demand for best practice. Truth is, we're like many notable programs throughout the country that has had moments of greatness...moments...Great moments, they play out on the big screen before every home game, with Munson narrating...Great times....long gone....

Yet as the seasons pass, many of our SEC brethern are sustaining greatness. UF, Bama, and LSU are considered the powerhouses of the SEC, with a few other "upstart" programs now reaching for the same sustained notariety...UGA...not so much! We've slid from 10/11 wins a season to finding moral victories within 8, 7 and 6 win seasons...Sad...

Mark Richt is a great man! I would love to have him as a neighbor. He'd prolly have a set of my house keys, just in case....and I'd have no problem with my teenage girls babysitting his children. I'd invite them to our church and visit theirs...But that's the distinction between friend and employee!...

History tends to repeat itself, so I've accepted the fact that we'll likely not see much in the way of change. I suspect that we'll have another great, perhaps excellent recruiting class. Lady luck, that often shines on notable programs, may provide us with a few more moments of greatness to be later displayed in living color...However, I suspect we will likely not rise to, nor sustain the level of supremacy as those programs we loathe and envy, until we accept our mediocrity and demand more!

GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
