BISHOP, Ga. ---- The Georgia Equestrian team withstood downpours early and late, and generally soggy conditions to dominate Southern Methodist 11-1 in a Hunt Seat-only match Sunday at the UGA Equestrian Complex. Its victory completed a nearly perfect weekend for the Bulldogs, who dispatched their other guests, Kansas State, 16-4 here Saturday.
Her team's performance had Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig in an optimistic frame of mind. "I think it was a very solid performance and everyone came in ready to work today. Because of the rain today and staying on schedule, they had to be really on point. We had some great rides today."
Georgia got the day started with a 5-1 victory in Equitation over Fences. Junior Michelle Morris was named MVP with the meet-high score of 88. Anthony and Morris, along with teammate Grace Rogers, won points in both Hunt Seat events.
A final afternoon shower did not deter the Bulldogs from sweeping the Mustangs 6-0 in the Equitation on the Flat event. Sophomore Carly Anthony gathered MVP honors with a high score of 83 and a 19-point victory margin. The Bulldogs surrendered a single point to the Mustangs in the Fences competition.
Given the conditions of the day, Boenig felt confident about the Bulldogs' future. "We're right where we need to be. We're already riding with confidence and without the mistakes. We need to continue to raise the bar. Get a little bit more out of our extensions and our turns. Getting to the nit-picky things that we know we need to see in both English and Western. That will put us where we need to be."
The Bulldogs take to the competition ring next on October 23, when take on SEC rival South Carolina in Bishop.
