Varsity Jr. closes was created by stevedawg
The Varsity Jr. on Lavista at Cheshire Bridge Rds in Atlanta has closed.
In what as many decribe as both sides being too stuborn on a zoning issue it closed last week. Apparently the new VP, whom no one seems to know who he is or where he came from, wanted to remodel and modernize.
There is a new one on Mansell Rd. off 400 and one off Jimmy Carter near I85. It was said on TV that this is what the new guy is up to.
No one mentioned if it was loosing money and the daily crowds were probably making a profit.
Another destroyed landmark along with the downtown Athens Varsity. (RIP)
It wasn't broke and did not need fixing.

Stevedawg: The Varsity Jr was started by Frank Cordy Jr. I had freshman english with Frank Jr in 1950 at old Park Hall. Frank was killed by some nut case in a Waffle House in Sandy Springs many years ago. The Var Jr. was the old Raja Drive In on Lindberg Dr. Maybe Buc would remember that old drive-in. Downtown is the only Var. that's worth visiting, that is other than Athens. The rest just don't stack up. Anyway it will be missed. I believe that Frank JR's wife is the top gun now at all the Varsitys.
As always GO DAWGS!!!!!!! What you have, what you have, two chilli dogs, an order of fries & a frosted orange, walking. Don't foreget a fried pie. Old memories!!

DawgDoc, the only Varsity that myself and my friends frequented was the one Downtown. Pull that 52 Chevy Convertible, rolled and pleated, glass packs and continental kit in and have one of the many servers jump up on the fender. "What'll Ya Have?" . . . When we ate burgers elsewhere . . . The Krystal in Five Points Downtown. Eight cents for a burger, 10 cents with cheese.

I am going to the Varsity at Mansell Rd next Saturday then the Dawgs game on the radio.

ps.I used to live a mile from the Jr. for 15 years, left in '87. I saw Gordy Jr's wife behind the counter many times, her Jag parked out back. I emember the Waffle house thing.
