UGA QB's and Coach Richt

Some passing thoughts about UGA, Coach Richt and QB's.

We have had some interesting situations in my estimation since Coach Richt became head coach.

Coach Richt is noted for being an offensive coach, and especially a coach that understands how to coach QB's. Coach Richt of course was a QB in college and after college moved on to the NFL. Returning to college coaching after his stay in the NFL, he began to build a reputation at FSU, well deserved reputation. He had great success at FSU, being one of the main reasons that FSU had what I would call the glory years.

I guess what I have a problem with is why we (UGA) have had what I would call problems at QB. If there was one position on the squad that one would think should be secure year after year, in my estimation, it would be QB.

UGA runs a pro-style offense, an offense that Coach Richt understands as good or better than most. We have a young fellow come in from Texas and this offense propelled him to the number one draft choice in the NFL. What I am trying to say is . . . . why is it that we don't have a long list of folks that are chomping at the bits to play QB at UGA. . . .

I am not going to trash any UGA QB that has played under Coach Richt, but I am asking where is the talent year after year. If we have a talented QB on campus, just makes sense that folks like AJ and others are attracted to UGA. Improves the entire program.

Appears that some changes, maybe major changes are in the lineup soon. For example a young QB from North Carolina, Christian LeMay. If this young talent is all that he is cracked up to be, he is not going to want to walk the sidelines. That is what is going on with LG right now, not being able to play. Understand that talent changes a lot of hopes and desires.

If AM turns out to be a very special SEC QB, what is the future for CL? Will CL be willing to stand in line for one, two or so years?

Gray clearly sees that he is not going to be the starter at Georgia. Will he get playing time? Some suggest that LG will have a special package for him to run . . . is that to appease him and keep him on campus, just in case AM gets hurt. Somehow I don't think that is fair to LG. If I can go to another school and be the QB for two years, regardless of the division, would have to seriously look at that. LG knows that he will not play in the NFL, this young man just wants to play football on Saturdays. I have great respect for LG and if he leaves, I have nothing but good thoughts of him being a \"team player\" at UGA.

So here is where I am at personally with Coach Richt. I love the fact that he is going all out to bring the best of the best to UGA. I hope that we have 3, 4, 5 QB's all talented and playing their butts off in practice and making it a difficult decision for Coach Richt at the QB position. Don't play someone because they are Seniors, or don't stop a Freshman from playing. Know that MS played as a Freshman. When you have that type of talent, meaning the type of talent the NFL is looking for, play them. The top notch talent is NOT going to remain in college for four years, ain't gonna happen.

I have said in other threads on this board that Coach Richt needs to get seriously involved in the offense. He does not have to worry one bit about the defense, and I will go to the wall with that. Coach Grantham and his list of defensive coaches don't need Coach Richt's help, they will do just fine. My concern is that Coach Richt gets on track and do what he does best, or used to do best . . . . run the offense. Coach Richt/Coach Grantham apply their knowledge to what they do best and I will then start to think that we (UGA) have a solid chance at the mythical number one.

One last thought, Coach Richt played behind QB'S in college and the NFL. He found his niche with Coach Bobby Bowden, coaching. He was a good football player, but not a number one either in college or pro. He has been and can be number one coaching in the SEC. Maybe needs to change a couple of things and get back to what he does best. Coach offense.

Actually Buc, I feel we have had a long list of top QB's wanting to play at UGA....at least top rated.

1. David Greene....2nd winningest QB in NCAA history
2. DJ....highly touted.....heavily recruited
3. LG....highly touted out of Missouri
4. JC....very highly touted out of NC (didn't pan out but.....still highly recruited
5. MS....1 of 2 best QB recruits the in country.....#1 at elite 11 camp
6. AM....very highly touted.....#1 at elite 11 camp
7. ZM....invited to elite 11 camp
8. Mason.....very high rank in state of Ga
9. CL.....everybody wants him.....big time player

Not a bad list and maybe more but if you were a good QB, wouldn't you have gone elsewhere with MS at UGA?

Just my opinion on the QB quantity/quality statement.

Interesting list wlayton.

David Greene did very well at UGA. David was recruited prior to CMR coming aboard in 2001.

DJ in my opinion should have played a lot more. He was I think the first QB that CMR recruited in 2001. CMR decided on DG as the starter his RF year and that played out very well. DJ stayed but saw very little playing time. However, DG proved to be a winner.

LG and JC gave their best.

MS was a special talent.

AM has all the credentials.

ZM chose his path.

Mason seems to have all the confidence needed to play the position. Not rated outside of Georgia. As far as I can see.

CL not on board yet, hoping he ends up with us.

If I look at the QB's above that CMR has offered sholarships to, it has been interesting to me. DJ, JC and LG, while being recruited heavily did not get a lot of playing time.

AM and Mason have yet to take a snap. Have great confidence in AM, don't have an opinion yet on Mason.

The point that I am trying to make is I can't quite understand going into the coming year with what some would say, short handed. ZM, know that CMR did not see that coming.

Myself, want CMR more involved with the offense and he said he will be.

If CL chooses UGA, bet here is that one of the main reasons, other than spiritual, will be because we run the pro set. That is the offense that Coach Richt knows from top to bottom and I sure hope he will promote that to the best of his ability.

You make a good case. Maybe I am looking for too much from Coach Richt.

You are correct about DG not recruited by CMR but certainly wanted to come to UGA. My point was that ON PAPER, there was a pretty darn good list of QB's that CMR has gone after and gotten. Hit on some....miss on some......some may have been overrated. But this is true at most all big time programs. I haven't been unhappy with the QB's we have gone after but am TOTALLY with you on the matter of CMR taking the reigns back over on offense. Couldn't agree with you more. :woohoo: :woohoo:

wlayton, it is going to be very interesting to see what happens at QB if CL commits on Friday. I want competition at every position. What a great problem to have, two or three fighting for the same position. Before ZM went down, he was causing quite a stir to AM who was rated I think the #3 recruit in the nation.

The difference in the coaching at UGA and Bama in my opinion is that Saban continually reloads. Lots of people are talking about the number of folks that Bama lost to the draft, not sure they will be missed.

Want my head coach to put his nose to the grindstone and do the things that I know he is capable of. Want those quality athletes playing between the hedges, not for UF, AU and UA.

Spurrier has said that he is going to make all of the calls on offense for SC this season. Would love to see Coach Richt do the same thing for UGA. Still licking my wounds from the pounding we took when SS marched his troops into Athens. Would appreciate CMR putting a ton on SS, just because . . . :woohoo: :woohoo:

BUMP!! (as you would say, my friend)

Saban and UM are the 2 best coaches in the country, imo. Saban being the best in my book. Don't agree with many things associated with them but as a HC and going after NC's....none are better.
