Some passing thoughts about UGA, Coach Richt and QB's.
We have had some interesting situations in my estimation since Coach Richt became head coach.
Coach Richt is noted for being an offensive coach, and especially a coach that understands how to coach QB's. Coach Richt of course was a QB in college and after college moved on to the NFL. Returning to college coaching after his stay in the NFL, he began to build a reputation at FSU, well deserved reputation. He had great success at FSU, being one of the main reasons that FSU had what I would call the glory years.
I guess what I have a problem with is why we (UGA) have had what I would call problems at QB. If there was one position on the squad that one would think should be secure year after year, in my estimation, it would be QB.
UGA runs a pro-style offense, an offense that Coach Richt understands as good or better than most. We have a young fellow come in from Texas and this offense propelled him to the number one draft choice in the NFL. What I am trying to say is . . . . why is it that we don't have a long list of folks that are chomping at the bits to play QB at UGA. . . .
I am not going to trash any UGA QB that has played under Coach Richt, but I am asking where is the talent year after year. If we have a talented QB on campus, just makes sense that folks like AJ and others are attracted to UGA. Improves the entire program.
Appears that some changes, maybe major changes are in the lineup soon. For example a young QB from North Carolina, Christian LeMay. If this young talent is all that he is cracked up to be, he is not going to want to walk the sidelines. That is what is going on with LG right now, not being able to play. Understand that talent changes a lot of hopes and desires.
If AM turns out to be a very special SEC QB, what is the future for CL? Will CL be willing to stand in line for one, two or so years?
Gray clearly sees that he is not going to be the starter at Georgia. Will he get playing time? Some suggest that LG will have a special package for him to run . . . is that to appease him and keep him on campus, just in case AM gets hurt. Somehow I don't think that is fair to LG. If I can go to another school and be the QB for two years, regardless of the division, would have to seriously look at that. LG knows that he will not play in the NFL, this young man just wants to play football on Saturdays. I have great respect for LG and if he leaves, I have nothing but good thoughts of him being a \"team player\" at UGA.
So here is where I am at personally with Coach Richt. I love the fact that he is going all out to bring the best of the best to UGA. I hope that we have 3, 4, 5 QB's all talented and playing their butts off in practice and making it a difficult decision for Coach Richt at the QB position. Don't play someone because they are Seniors, or don't stop a Freshman from playing. Know that MS played as a Freshman. When you have that type of talent, meaning the type of talent the NFL is looking for, play them. The top notch talent is NOT going to remain in college for four years, ain't gonna happen.
I have said in other threads on this board that Coach Richt needs to get seriously involved in the offense. He does not have to worry one bit about the defense, and I will go to the wall with that. Coach Grantham and his list of defensive coaches don't need Coach Richt's help, they will do just fine. My concern is that Coach Richt gets on track and do what he does best, or used to do best . . . . run the offense. Coach Richt/Coach Grantham apply their knowledge to what they do best and I will then start to think that we (UGA) have a solid chance at the mythical number one.
One last thought, Coach Richt played behind QB'S in college and the NFL. He found his niche with Coach Bobby Bowden, coaching. He was a good football player, but not a number one either in college or pro. He has been and can be number one coaching in the SEC. Maybe needs to change a couple of things and get back to what he does best. Coach offense.
