Interesting read Larry. As a person that grew up and played football in the 50's, going off to serve our country in the late 50's and 60's, can truthfully say that I have read stories of human relations such as this, not with the football winning numbers, but the relations side.
Many times pictures can be painted about certain persons, areas and eras. However not all facts are supplied when the paint brush comes out. Does not surprise me that Chuck Ealey not only won the QB position, also does not surprise me that he was accepted by his classmates. These are the stories that are never told in the media. Pleases me that you take the time to honor a deserving person such as Ealey.
Greg McElroy has done a good job for Alabama, no doubt. Wonder where this young man would have been if the present coaching staff had not been in place . . . . wonder where Chuck Ealey would have been if not for the head coaches he played for back in the day.
Some things never change, coaching these young folks depends so much on leadership. Saban changed football at Alabama like no other head coach has since Bryant. We feel the same thing has happened at UGA. Not just Coach Richt, the entire team of coaches that reside in Athens now. Grantham, Lakatos, Belin, part of the resurrection of UGA football.
I would vote for Chuck Ealey to receive honors, must add this . . . . would also give credit to those coaches that did not see color, much the same thing that Chuck Ealey said . . . it was not color, it was winning. Amen Brother.
