ATHENS — A bit of UGA football news this evening . . .
Mark Richt has defined the special-teams coaching roles on the Bulldogs’ reconfigured staff. Richt said Warren Belin will take over the kickoff-coverage team and Bryan McClendon the punt return and block teams. Those duties previously were handled by Jon Fabris, who was fired in December. Tony Ball will continue to coach the kickoff-return team and John Lilly the punt team. Lilly will take over Fabris’ role of coordinating the special-teams meeting and practice schedules, Richt said.
Also, new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham provided some specifics on how players will line up in the Bulldogs’ new 3-4 defense for the start of spring practice next week:
On the defensive line, DeAngelo Tyson and Kwame Geathers will primarily play the nose, while Demarcus Dobbs, Abry Jones and Brandon Wood, among others, will be ends. Grantham added that Wood also can play nose.
Grantham said Justin Houston, Cornelius Washington, Montez Robinson and Richard Samuel will be outside linebackers. Akeem Dent, Darryl Gamble, Marcus Dowtin and Christian Robinson will be inside linebackers.
Grantham stressed that many players will work at more than one position in spring practice and that there will be position changes in the spring and beyond.
Richt said Nick Williams, who moved from safety to linebacker early last season, will return to safety.
