Again, it is not so much the loss, it is the way that we are losing. With me it started a couple of years back with Tennessee. That game in my opinion showed the \"real cracks\" in our coaches and their system.
This, exactly.
Tennessee, 2006
Georgia Tech, 2008
Kentucky, 2009
All games in which we had a LARGE halftime lead (24-14 against Tennessee, 24-7 against Tech, 20-6 against UK) and in which the opposing team made OFFENSIVE adjustments while Willie and Co. made none. Final scores? Tennessee 51, UGA 33; GT 45, UGA 42; UK 34, UGA 27.
Let's not forget the 2006 Sugar Bowl, or the 2007 South Carolina game, both of which we should have won. The '07 SCarolina game -- in which we failed to score a touchdown and lost by 4 points -- cost us the SEC and national titles.
Let's also not forget the games we should have lost due to poor defense in recent years. The Arkansas and South Carolina games from this year come to mind, as do the LSU and Kentucky games from last year.
Finally, let's remember what would have won us the LSU game this year, DESPITE the terrible penalty on A.J. Green: good special teams play. A.J. Green's phantom celebration did not allow Holliday to run a kickoff all the way back to our 38. That's a lack of gunners. That's no one being downfield to stop him, no matter how fast his 40 time is. That's John Fabris.
There is no longer any excuse. Willie Martinez must be fired, not demoted back to DB coach (especially if he's really coaching players NOT to turn around...what kind of idiocy is that?) and John Fabris must be taken off of kickoff teams. And if Richt won't do even those two obvious things, he needs to go.
Yes, that's the first time I've ever said -- on this board or otherwise -- that there is a scenario under which Mark Richt should be fired or asked to resign. You have to be three things to be a great college coach:
1) A good coach
2) A good leader of men and teacher of young men
3) A good manager of your coaches
Richt is not the third. Period. If he can't step up and do what needs to be done, somebody needs to come in who will.
