Defense (yet another CWM rant)

As elated as I am about yet another victory over the old ball coach in the SEC opener, a simple truth is still not lost on me: we came thisclose to scoring 40 on an opponent and still losing...again. The stop at the end to keep South Carolina from going ahead had nothing to do with CWM. It never should have gotten to that point in the first place.

And this time, it wasn't a perrenial power or arch rival like Alabama or Georgia Tech. It was against a team that consistently finishes in the bottom half of the SEC east and shows no signs of reversing that trend this year.

Mark my words: if CWM is still defensive coordinator come Halloween, the Gators will hang 60 on us in Jacksonville.

Defensive end was our weakness last night. We need to improve that position quickly. Our pass rush is terrible without a strong DE. When we did blitz, it was effective. Just wonder why we didn't blitz more?

I can't say that I agree with that. When we blitzed Garcia either dumped it off='s 1st down OR he just ran it for the 1st down. I don't even remember a sack. I thought our D was totally ineffective with EVERYTHING they called.

That right, our D makes every QB look like the next heisman contender.

The Gamecocks ran 83 offensive plays on us and we won the game.
How unusual is that?

There were three sacks, wlayton. And we have Justin Houston coming back next week.

I'll address this in another thread, but look at it: without the safety and the pick-6, it's 41-28. That's a much better score, right?

If we can just stop making mistakes ON THE FIELD, we'll be all right. We're not going to hold people to 10 points with this defense, and we're not going to stop Florida with it, either, but we won't be in danger of scoring 40 and losing, either. We HAVE to stop giving the other team the ball, and that's on-the-field play, not offensive or defensive scheming or play-calling. That's execution by the players.
