wlayton, named two of my South Georgia bird dogs . . . . Dooley and Erk. Back in the day when we went to the Sun Bowl, have never seen UGA spirits higher. UGA needed a serious boost when VD came along. Also put it to Bama and the Bear, which the media tried their best to prove a knee touched and Bama should have won.
Anyway, over the next many years I watched what I thought was going to be a dynamic football team with few restrictions. As it ended up, there was no reason for game planning for UGA, we did the same thing every week. It is fine when you are the most powerful, or fastest or whatever, but there has to be a game plan. Much like what we are going through right now. Would love to see CMR take over calling the plays, use the same imagination he displayed when he ran the offense at FSU. The players are definitely on this team.
Of course football today is different than it was in the dark ages. VD beating UF, that was definitely a plus, I also remember getting our butts kicked by Auburn and Pat Sullivan. One of the darkest days of my life in Athens. . . .
VD had his day, it was a time for someone like him. However, he simply let many great chances pass him by with his 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Also, will never forget Erk leaving UGA and moving down the road to Statesboro. Should never have happened, Erk loved UGA and he knew the meaning and taught GATA. Will stop, there is a lot more in this envelope however. Go Dawgs!
