Time to start this thread. There was a game on Saturday and, like all college football games since the mid-'90s, one team won and one team lost. We have another one to play.
A few things to be afraid of, and a few things to be excited about.
1) We should be afraid of Stephen Garcia. Make no mistake, he's improved a TON in the off-season. Anyone who watched the game Thursday should be shocked that the 'Cocks only scored 7 points.
THEN AGAIN...
2) SCarolina only scored 7 points. That's inexplicable, but typical of Gamecock offenses under Spurrier thus far. Garcia may be vastly improved, but SCarolina still has no running game and no playmakers at WR. Without those basics to keep the pressure off of Garcia, the 'Cocks will not score on the same defense that Georgia played on Saturday.
3) We should be afraid of Eric Norwood. If we don't pound the rock against the Gamecocks, Norwood will make what Perrish Cox did to A.J. Green look like a game of pattycake. That kid's middle name should be Shutdown.
THEN AGAIN...
4) It's not as if we can't get open against SCarolina. Russell Wilson's receivers had to drop an AWFUL lot of perfect passes from him, especially in the fourth quarter, for NC State to lose that game. Our guys are going to be faster and more physical than NC State. We just have to be faster and more physical than South Carolina.
5) We should be afraid of SCarolina's defense as a whole. Right now, they're one of the top defenses in the nation. AGAIN. They're even better than Florida, even though UF also held their opponents to 3 points. But Florida allowed a lot of yardage and some first downs, and they did it against the Little Sisters of the Poor Sewing Academy and Distance Learning Center. Say what you want about NC State; they're a BCS school.
THEN AGAIN...
6) It was NC State. Say what you want about how good Oklahoma State is (and I have, on this board), but we held ourselves to ten points. I don't think SCarolina will do that against us, not with so many close calls and NC State guys dropping balls all over the field. If we can get some kind of offensive rhythm going (and that's a big if, after Saturday), then SCarolina will NOT hold us to ten or fewer. Not with the team they've got now. Spurrier's teams have never done that, though Lou Holtz held Jim Donnan to 10 in 2000 and Richt to 9 in 2001. Of course, Charlie Strong was in Columbia then...
Look, guys, we'll know a lot more about Georgia after this weekend. We all know that Mark Richt has one or two games a year where there are complete offensive shutdowns. Usually they're against Florida (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008), but we've had significant ones against South Carolina (2001, 2007), Tennessee (2004, 2007), and LSU (2003). The week following each of those games, I didn't tihnk the offense that went out on that field would ever win another game. With the exception of the 2005 and 2006 Florida games (following which we lost to Auburn and Kentucky, respectively), they all went out and won the next week. We also know what happened to those teams after that. So I think we'll know more about what Georgia can do this year after Saturday night. I'm not panicking yet, but I will do a hell of a lot of it it SCarolina shuts us down.
Let me know what you think, and GO DAWGS!!!!
