Week Four: Amp Arnold

In the annals of Georgia receiving lore, the great memories are of Lindsay Scott's catch in the 1980 Florida game, or Corey Allen versus Georgia Tech or Auburn, or Michael Johnson's miracle grab against the Tigers in 2002. But the man who quietly racked up both memorable plays and yardage on the 1978 \"Wonderdawg Underdawg\" team and the 1980 National Champion Bulldog squad was Anthony \"Amp\" Arnold.

Perhaps best remembered for his touchdown catch and game-winning end-around run in the Georgia Tech game in 1978, Arnold has been widely regarded as the greatest athlete to ever come out of Athens' Cedar Shoals High School. He was the receptions leader on that 1980 team, and was an All-SEC selection that year as well. Another interesting stat about Amp is the fact that he caught Buck Belue's only completion in the 1981 Sugar Bowl, a 7-yard spring-out for a first down that kept Georgia's final drive alive in the fourth quarter and allowed Belue to run out the clock, securing the game and the title.

Amp is now a member of the UGA Circle of Honor and the Athens Sports Hall of Fame. Here's the place to share your memories of him. And here is the legendary Voice of the Georgia Bulldogs, Larry Munson, with the most famous call surrounding big Amp.

On 12/2/1978, Larry Munson said: 4th down, what a year. 2:36, Georgia getting beat in their own ballpark, they need 2 and a half yards now on 4th down. Buck Belue sprinting to the right looking to throw, looking, in trouble, and there's a man open! Arnold! Touchdown! Touchdown! ... Going for 2, they're going for two, and young Buck Belue looking and he throws, no, the -- Interference! They knocked the receiver down, 3 flags. GA Tech in a 6-5 packed close, Dawgs need a yard for a possible victory, Belue pitched the ball...Arnold got it! Anthony Arnold got 2 points, Anthony Arnold a flanker. They ran Anthony Arnold, they pitched a delay, they got the yard, 29-28.
