Dawgs Get a Fox

Okay...who is Mark Fox again?

Well, as of a press conference to be held today, he's the head basketball coach at the University of Georgia. He comes to Athens from Reno, where he did sort of okay in the WAC, leading the Nevada Wolfpack to a winning season and a two-point loss in the WAC tournament to Utah State.

Not that I'm a big basketball guy -- I'm most decidedly NOT -- but it seems to me that this is a move sideways, not up, from Dennis Felton. It's another coach who was moderately successful at a mid-major after having been an assistant at a few other moderately big-name majors. Unlike Mike Anderson -- damn shame we let him get away -- I have no idea what kind of roundball Mark Fox plays. Hopefully it's an up-tempo full-court game comparable to what Anderson -- or Calipari -- plays, otherwise what's the point?

I'm not ashamed to say that, until someone else provides me with evidence, this move does NOT thrill me nor excite me. Hell, even Dennis Felton had some tournament appearances and a win with Western Kentucky. There was a little bit of buzz.

Ah well. Wait till football season. Thank the good lord for the Diamond Dawgs!!!

dapolla, with you on the direction of the move. Hope that we see a change in the path basketball has taken in our recent past.

Some of the UGA sports programs . . . .
Gymnastics -- Excellent
Golf -- Excellent
Swimming -- Excellent
Baseball -- Excellent
Football -- Excellent
Basketball --

Tried to capitalize Baseball several times, does not work sometimes, don't quite understand.

Watched the press conference with Evans and Fox. Fox appears to be a disciplinarian. Would say this, if we miss some of the \"high\" choices, but get the young men that want to be a part of something, it is agreeable with me. The program is a mess to say the least. I really hope that this works out for UGA, could pay dividends in many areas. Fox is our basketball coach, seems to be a family man, much like CMR. He belongs to the University of Georgia now, make us proud, build an area that has been overlooked or bypassed for many years. There is tape to be viewed on the press conference if anyone wants to take a peek. Thoughts would be interesting from board members.

Well, I will say this: the most heralded head coach we've had -- coming in at the time, at least -- have been Jim Donnan (national titles at Marshall! Hooray!), Mark Richt (and at the time, most people gave more or at least equal credit for F$U's success to Bobby Bowden), and...oh, I dunno, Pop Warner? No one knew who the hell Wally Butts or Vince Dooley were when they came in. If he has good ideas about basketball and good core values, he'll at least have a shot in this SEC which is about as down as a major conference can get.

dapolla, hope that Coach Fox makes not only me happy, but your Grandfather. Basketball has been the weakest link at UGA. (mens)

Did you by chance get a chance to view the press conference?

Noticed that Coach Fox is left handed . . . . wonder why I could that beautiful curve ball. Have never seen a left hander than could throw the ball straight. I am easily impressed at my age, sure hope that we get the returns out of this coach.

Hope Fox surprises all us naysayers. I remember saying \"who in the #ell is this Mark Richt guy? What are we doing hiring a nobody? A Bobby Bowden yes-man!\" Boy, was I wrong.
