Hey! Ho! Twelve in a row!

Ladies and gents, we are the number one team in the nation. We have scored in double-digits in 9 of 12 games. We have only trailed twice in 108 innings. We swept Arizona in Tuscon.

Does David Perno know what he's doing, or what?

Georgia baseball has never experienced a \"Golden Age\" like it is currently experiencing under Coach Perno. The man has the Midas Touch. Consider:

1) He has been to the CWS as a player (1990), an assistant coach (2001) and a head coach (2004, 2006, 2008).
2) Since he began coaching at UGA the Dawgs have won three SEC titles (2001, 2004, 2008) in eight years, something that has never happened in our history.
3) As head coach, he has taken home two SEC crowns in five years, something that has only happened once in history (1953-4).
4) The only title that eludes him is the SEC Tournament Title, something Georgia has never won.
5) Under Coach Perno the Dawgs became the first team in HISTORY to reach, and then win a game in, the CWS final after having had a losing season the year before.
6) Under Coach Perno the Dawgs have gone on their two longest winning streaks in history. They are currently (as of 1:30 pm 3/10, before the first LeMoyne game) on a twelve-game winning streak, and went on a 13-game winning streak in 2006 entering the SEC Tournament.

I could keep listing, but I don't need to. The man has turned our baseball program into a perennial powerhouse. He's got a winning record of 251-180-1 in seven years and he's just generally awesome.

Just a little love. We talk about our football folk on here so often; I think it's important to recognize the other great Dawgs that may not receive as much national attention as they should.

Ok dapolla,

You've done it! You have moved me (in a manly way) Seriously, you've got me so FIRED UP about our phenomenal baseball team that I am going to go ahead and pay for a supscription to Gxtra while vacationing in Savannah this weekend. Besides, I'm about to be out in SLC, Utah for a 6-month project so it'll be well worth the money to get some Dawgs coverage way out there in the Beehive State.

Baseball was my FIRST love anyways. From T-ball through high school I wore the #3 in honor of my first sports hero, Dale Murphy. Once I'm more informed about OUR team, I'll chat w/you often about CDP's Diamond Dawgs.

Thanks Dapolla!

Glad to be of service, Goose.

Incidentally, in the backyard as kids, I was always Dale Murphy, while my brother was Bob Horner. Looks like their team might not do too badly come April, either!!!

A few updates:

1) The streak now stands at 13, the longest winning streak to start a Georgia season EVER.
2) We have now scored in the double digits in 10 of 13 games.
2a) As an added bonus, we have scored in the first inning in 11 of those games. We have outscored our opponents 142-2 in the first inning thus far this year.
3) I want to clarify that Coach Perno was an assistant coach, not a head coach, when we won our 2001 SEC title. But he had begun coaching at UGA by 2001.
4) Rich Poythress (pronounced POY-tress) hit his FOURTH three-run homer of the year last night, his sixth overall (the other two were a two-run shot against Wofford and a grand slam against Quinnipiac), giving him 37 RBI on the year as of that at-bat. Seriously, if he keeps on this pace, he's going to make Gordon Beckham's record-smashing 2008 season look like microscopically small potatoes.

A couple of corrections:

1) The streak now stands at 14, the longest winning streak to start a Georgia season and the SECOND longest streak in history (the Dawgs won 19 straight to finish the 1908 season).
2) We have now scored in double digits in 11 of 14 games.
3) Rich Poythress has 29 RBI on the season, not 37.

All of that said...I'm really proud of the Dawgs' performance last night against LeMoyne, much more so than I am of their performance Tuesday. Why? Because LeMoyne played far better on Wednesday. Tuesday's battle was riddled with Dolphin errors. Last night their pitching was great for four innings, only allowing us 2 runs (1 earned) before we scored 6 in the 5th to break the game open. That shows me that a) Chase Hawkins can PITCH! Five innings of one-hit shutout ball? Heavenly LORD! b) we can still win when we're not scoring. Given absolutely no run support (the entire time he was in, Hawkins never had more than a two-run lead), our pitching shut the other team down and our defense played great ball. There were a couple of stellar catches, to be sure (one Lyle Allen over-the-shoulder catch reminded me a bit of Willie...), but for the most part, the fundamentals helped us turn double plays and pick off unsuspecting would-be basestealers.

Last night showed me that we can win with a small lead just as easily as we can win with a 5-run lead early. I'm proud of our boys.
