This girl is amazing.
Last year, just before SECs, she pops her Achilles. She can't help the Gym Dawgs, who -- we are seeing this year -- very luckily won both SECs and Nationals without her.
She comes back on a mission. An absolute
mission. SEC Athlete of the Week three weeks running, and wins the all-around at her first three meets, against West Virginia (ranked), LSU (tough meet) and Utah (much tougher meet).
So what does she do last night? In her third tough meet in seven days, Courtney for-the-love-of-God Kupets wins the all-around for the fourth consecutive meet and hits TWO (!) perfect 10.0 scores, on bars and beam. I'm watching the replay right now; just watched the beam routine and it is flawless. The crowd reaction when the judges both raised tens was electric and makes me wish I had attended even a single meet while a student at Georgia. Sadly, studies and an infant son restricted me to just football and baseball.
So. Courtney Kupets. What in the world can you say? She's an incredible story and she deserves her place on the Georgia Mt. Rushmore just as much as Herschel Walker, just as much as Fran Tarkenton, just as much as Spud Chandler and Saudia Roundtree and perhaps a bit more than big sister Ashley. Tremendous. Tremendous athlete and a tremendous performer. If you don't have GXtra, pay the money just for a month if you don't want it year-round, and get on georgiadogs.com and watch the replay of the Georgia-Alabama meet. Georgia won last night, by the way, 197.175 - 195.275, besting one of the best teams in the country by nearly a full point. Phenomenal.
