I might be old school and believe that if a university commits to a player to give him (or her) a free education in exchange for playing a sport. The player, in turn, should be bound to stay. I agree that there should be special hardship cases. If a player chooses to leave the university early to reap the rewards of a multi-million dollar contract in professinal sports.
