I don't think that enough has been made of Auburn's final failed drive a week ago. Twenty-six years ago, Larry Munson made a classic call, begging Georgia's defense to hunker down against Auburn in order to preserve a win, an undefeated season and an SEC title. The defense hunkered. This year, the defense needed to hunker down twice against Auburn in order to preserve a 17-13 win and a three-game win streak, the first since that SEC Champion defense made sugar fall from the sky in 1982.
In the words of Larry Munson, \"The defense hunkered, didn't they? They did hunker!\"
For all of the anger we've been displaying towards Georgia's defense, they did hunker. For all of the bemoaning of CWM's system we've done since 2005, they did hunker. Twice this 2008 Georgia defense, made up mainly of Rennie Curran, Geno Atkins and a bunch of other guys who inexplicably weren't hurt, propped up an offense that was inexcusably terrible on Saturday and did the same thing that Terry Hoage and those '82 Dawgs did in Auburn by hunkering down and forcing not one but two fourth-down incompletions to take over on downs and end the game. Certainly not as much was at stake in this game, but in any college rivalry not much more needs to be at stake than pride. Just ask Washington and WSU this weekend.
More on this board needs to be said about the defense stepping up when they had to against Auburn. I know that Auburn hasn't been able to score this year, but neither has Kentucky; we certainly allowed them to score a good deal on us, didn't we? The defense knew they did poorly against UK and I think they adjusted properly. Whether you agree with me or not, however, you have to admit one thing: They did hunker down.
