Bill Cowher is not going to coach. The rumors just abound every time a job in the south comes open because he retired at the top of his game and hinted he might want to come back to coaching 'someday.' The man lives in NC, so I can speak to this: he wants to spend more time with his family, especially his kids. His daughter's about to start at Wofford, so if he was going to coach anywhere it'd be Clemson. But I've heard him linked to NC State, Clemson, SCarolina (before Spurrier got there) and North Carolina. It's a rumor mill. It's stupid.
I love Will Muschamp, but I firmly believe that anyone who goes after him at this point is not bright. He needs more time to develop as a DC before he's head-coach-ready. Mark Richt had thirteen years as a grad asst and coordinator before Vince Dooley hired him, and even he admits he wasn't sure if he was ready. With what's happened with Mike Sherman, Bill Callahan, Bobby Petrino, and the rapidly sinking ship Dennis Erickson's piloting, programs tend to be steering away from the big-name coaches and the \"trendy picks.\" Tennessee is going to want to go in more of a Wade Phillips direction. They don't want to waste money on someone who can't guarantee them stability. And wins.
As a North Carolinean, I must say I'm quite sad to have seen Skip Holtz's star fall as far as it has...
