Recently, Pat Forde wrote a column on ESPN.com entitled \"Alabama Delivers Last Rites to Georgia, Arrives on Title Scene.\" One paragraph in that article bothered me so much that I had to write him back. Here's the letter I sent to him. Hope it finds you all well and in good spirits about the Tennessee game and the East in general.
Pat -
Usually I am a big fan of your writing, as well as of your assessment of southern football. However, I read one thing in your recent column (\"Alabama Delivers Last Rites to Georgia, Arrives on Title Scene\") that really bothered me.
\"Alabama led 31-0 at halftime on its way to scoring the most points it ever has against Georgia. The first half was such a mauling that the Dogs were booed as they left the field. Those who weren't booing had already left, stunned by this series of unfortunate events.\"
That is patently untrue. As a season ticket holder, I was at the game and personally witnessed applause and support for our Bulldogs by most of the Sanford Stadium crowd for the duration of the game. I didn't see a large number of people leaving until the fourth quarter, after our first possession following Prince Miller's punt return TD was stifled. If anyone was getting booed at halftime, it was the referees, who made some questionable calls which, while they didn't affect the outcome of the game, certainly contributed to the sour mood of us fans.
Pat, you're a good writer. You don't need to make Georgia's fan base out to be a bunch of booers and quitters and hate-on-the-teamers. Almost every Georgia fan I talked to on the way out of the game and on the buses back to the parking decks was very positive. We still have a tremendously good shot in the East, thanks to what Ole Miss did to Florida on the very same day. We still get to play everybody else in the East and we control our own destiny. We travelled across the country and defeated a Pac-10 power handily. We are still very much in the national title race, and are nowhere near outside of the SEC title race.
Please take this to heart, and read the article (posted on georgiadogs.com by a representative of the NCAA) that I have linked here. And, if you think about it, you might want to comment on ESPN.com about Georgia's fan base. Tell the truth about us. We love our Dawgs.
