So I'm sitting on my porch in Charlotte having my pre-game cigar (a Thompson's Manolete Churchill, good Dominican wrap, excellent draw, average taste) and I decided to blog about the game today, as well as about other college games going on.
First off, being a North Carolina boy, GO DUKE! I always thought David Cutcliffe got the shaft from Ole Miss, firing him for losing his first year without Eli Manning. When have they ever won WITHOUT a Manning? So it's nice that at the time of this writing, Duke is beating Navy 41-31. Not that I ever root against Navy, but I'm glad Duke has a team capable of winning more than one game every two seasons.
Secondly, I'm a little sad that whoever runs larrymunson.com has apparently decided to abandon maintenance of that site. It hasn't been updated since the Auburn game last year, which is a shame. It was a wonderful source of Larry highlights, not to mention the entire final drive of the 2006 Tech game (one of Larry's best series...right up there with the final stand against Auburn in '82, no kidding!) It's just another harbinger of the end, making me grateful for two things: one, the 44 years that Larry has given us, and two, the fact that Scott Howard seems more than capable of calling great Georgia games for the next couple of decades to come.
Now, about this game against SCarolina...we need to run the toss-sweep with Knowshon, Caleb up the middle and set up the play-action. Stafford has proven himself so good at the play-action pass -- and NFL scouts have taken note -- that it's virtually unstoppable as long as the O-line doesn't fold up. I really don't think that the defense needs a stellar effort today, because USC hasn't proven itself offensively yet. Even Hondo called their win over NC State \"the ugliest 34-0 victory in history.\" I think we need to be serviceable on D and throw consistently different and versatile looks at their defense when we have the ball and we'll be fine.
Final score: Georgia 31, USC 17
