I know he's a recent departure and so nostalgia isn't really part of this week's Dawg reminiscence, but since most wonks (including myself) have our defense as either #1 or #2 (behind USC) in the country, I thought I'd bring up the hardest-hitting defensive player I can ever remember. No kidding, one time I got up during a game to get another beer or some more chips, and I heard a smack all the way in the kitchen. Said to myself, \"Greg Blue must have just laid somebody out,\" you know, half-kidding? I go back in and they're showing a replay of Greg Blue nearly murdering some poor wideout. I remember when Thomas Davis left a year early I thought, \"Who's going to be our assassin out there?\" with some desperation. Then Greg Blue took the field. Prayer answered.
What really impressed me about Greg Blue was what he overcame. In light of Michael Lemon's exclusion from our University, I'm even more proud of #17 for turning his well-documented anger and aggression issues and using them only on the field. Greg had several disciplinary issues throughout high school and in the first year he was at Georgia. Through CMR's and CWM's mentoring and through his own desire and perseverance, Greg Blue was able to do well in school and only attack those who deserved it: men in the wrong color uniform.
So here's the place to share your memories of Greg Blue, an instrumental part of the 2005 SEC Championship run and quite literally the hardest hitter I've ever seen.
