If you're like me, you grew up both a Georgia Bulldogs fan and an Atlanta Braves fan, and you listened to both on the radio. Just as we all tune in to Georgia games to listen to Larry Munson, I quite often put the Fox or TS/SportsSouth games on mute so that I could listen to Skip Caray and Pete van Wieren call Braves games.
Skip passed away last night in his sleep at the age of 68, after a year of battling diabetes, liver and kidney problems, and other health issues. As we all know, the world goes silent when something like this happens, and Braves baseball will never ever be the same.
Some of Skip's greatest calls were:
\"A lotta room in right-center, if he hits one there we can dance in the streets. The 2-1. Swung, line drive left field! One run is in! Here comes Bream! Here's the throw to the plate! He is...safe! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!...Braves win! They may have to hospitalize Sid Bream; he's down at the bottom of a huge pile at the plate. They help him to his feet. Frank Cabrera got the game winner! The Atlanta Braves are National League champions again! This crowd is going berserk, listen!\"
- 1992 NLCS Game 7, on Francisco Cabrera's series-clinching single and Sid Bream's slide over home plate.
\"Mark gets the sign, the wind and the pitch here it is... swung, fly ball deep left center, Grissom on the run... Yes! Yes! Yes! The Atlanta Braves have given you a championship! Listen to this crowd! A mob scene on the field. Wohlers gets 'em one, two, three. A couple of fans rushing on the field. The Atlanta Braves have brought the first championship to Atlanta!\"
- 1995 World Series, Game 6
\"Go ahead and celebrate, Atlanta! Nobody expected this one!\"
- Upon John Smoltz recording a save against the Florida Marlins, clinching the 2003 National League East pennant.
