This Week's Dawg: SCOTT WOERNER

So every 100th post or so, I see one of the Dawg fans on this site say of Florida fans, \"Anyone remember a guy named Scott Woerner?\" Woerner may have been the most feared return man in the SEC in the late '70s, and one of the most effective in the country. He was part of the 1980 National Championship team and was instrumental in our defeat of Tech in 1978. Often you'd hear Larry call from the booth, \"Scott Woerner coming this way! Touchdown!\" as #19 went from deep on the kick to five yards from the goal line in what seemed like no time at all. One of my favorite Larry Munson calls of all time, in fact, is a Woerner punt return touchdown in that '78 Tech game: \"Scott...WOERNER WOERNER WOERNER WOERNER WOERNER!!! 72 yards, just boom! Straight up!\" That touchdown tied the game at 20 and set the stage for our Wonderdawg Underdawg team to win the game 29-28.

What are your Scott Woerner memories? Here's the place for them!

dapolla, my best memory goes something like this. We were playing Clemson and Woerner single handily accounted for our only 2 TD's in the 1st half while the offense didn't make ONE FIRST DOWN in the 1st half (if my memory is correct). He ran a 90+ yard punt back for a TD and also intercepted a pass on our goal line and ran it all the way back but they caught him on the 1 or 2 yard line....then we punched it in for the TD (or vice versa, int-TD...punt return to the 2). He outscored them by himself (again to my memory).

Yes he saved us vs Clemson, I was'nt alive but I have watched the 1980 highlight film many times and full games on DVD, I remember when he picked off a fade route in the endzone vs Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, i'm not sure but either Florida or Tech beat him on that same play earlier in the year and Notre Dame tried it and he played it perfectly, he also had another interception in that game, again I wasn't alive, but after seeing all of the games on DVD, Scott Woerner was always in the right spot at the right time and was a great returner.

If I remember wlayton, Scott Woerner didn't start the '80 Clemson game. Greg Bell did. Woerner was quite the showman, stuff that legends are made of.
