It makes me feel like much less of a man for admitting this, but I'm crying right now. This is the second time in my life that I've cried because my team lost a sporting event, and the first in my adult life. The first time was when I was 12 when John Smoltz lost game 7 of the world series to Jack Morris and the Minnesota Twins despite pitching a 9-inning shutout.
I was there when Tennessee hung 50 on us between the hedges. I was there when Vandy upset us on homecoming. I was there when West Virginia beat us in the Sugar Bowl. All of those things pale in comparrison to this.
This is bad. Oh man, this one hurts.
I guess the only silver lining is that with Oregon State winning as a 3 regional seed last year and now Fresno State winning as a 4, we can assume this type of thing is the way of the game in college baseball, and not an annomaly that only happens once every quarter century or so. The take away message is, we hit the recruiting trail and build a decent team that can play fundamental baseball year in and year out, and who knows what can happen? Just make it to someone's regional each year and it's always ours for the taking.
