Shoot. My original reply got erased. We'll see if I can remember it.
1) There is a reason why Sooner fans were the big winners in a recent study to determine the least-educated college football fan base. By a wide margin, Sooner fans were
a) The least educated
b) The most likely to have not attended the school (OU) for which they root
c) The least likely to have attended college at all.
2) What does he mean by \"east-west stadiums without a dome are gay\"? Does that mean that east-west stadiums without a dome only want to have intimate relations with other east-west domeless stadia? Or does it mean that Sanford Stadium is very, very happy? And hey, does he know of ANY college football stadiums in the country which have a dome? You know, like the Big House, or the Horseshoe, or Neyland, or the Rose Bowl, or LA Colisseum, or...hey, NONE of them have a dome?
3) Sooner Magic is downgrading our non-con schedule. In 2006 and 2007, we played two teams FROM OU's CONFERENCE!!! In 2007, we played their major intrastate rival, the subject of much of their hate and their perennial opponent in The Bedlam Series, which according to OU and OSU fans alike is the most hate-filled, intense, hard-fought and bitterly-contested college football rivalry in the history of the sport of college football. And in 2006, we played Colorado, who last year ended OU's shot at a national championship in stunning fashion. If those two teams are weak (and didn't OSU cost OU a shot at the MNC in '01 and '02? RxDawgboy? Am I right?), then isn't OU more than a little weak?
4) Let's compare non-con schedules. In 2008, OU will face UT-Chattanooga, Washington, Cincinnatti and Texas Christian. Cincy is the only team that should even give OU anything close to a problem, and the Bearcats have to go to Norman. Sure, OU has to go to Seattle to play UW, but Washington was 2-5 at home last year, beating only one non-conference opponent in Boise State. Their other non-con home opponent was Ohio State, who defeated them at home. By way of comparison, we have to go a longer way this year to Tempe, where Arizona State was 6-1 last year. UW's record last year was 4-9. Arizona State's? Including the bowl game, they were 10-3.
On the other hand, in addition to ASU Georgia plays Georgia Southern, Central Michigan and Georgia Tech. We won't pretend that Georgia Southern has a shot at us, but CMU is the two-time defending MAC champs, and you can't downplay the talent it takes to win any conference, not in this day and age. As for Tech? Well, unlike Sooner fans, we don't downplay or downgrade our in-state rivals. We know that on any given Saturday in November, Tech could beat us if we don't have our guard up. They took us to the limit in '04, cost us the national title in '27 and they still own the longest winning streak in the series, The Drought. People like DawgDoc and Buc and wlayton and Dan Magill still wake up in cold sweats thinking about The Drought, and I know that DawgDoc still gets emotional when anyone says the name Theron Sapp. Larry Munson counts COFH as the game he most wants to win every year, and in 2005 Quentin Moses said \"you can go 1-11 at Georgia, as long as that one is against Georgia Tech.\" Likewise, if you go 11-1, the season is lost if that one loss is to the Jackets. I can't believe that OU fans don't feel the same about the Cowboys. That's kind of sickening.
5) To be fair, let's look at non-con schedules in the past six years.
2002: OU played Tulsa, UTEP, Alabama and South Florida and went 4-0. Georgia played Northwestern Louisiana State, New Mexico State, Georgia Tech and Clemson. We also went 4-0. That year, OU's only quality opponent was Alabama; Georgia's QOs were Tech and Clemson.
2003: OU played North Texas, Alabama, Fresno State and UCLA and went 4-0. Georgia played Clemson, Tech, Middle Tennessee State and UAB and also went 4-0. OU's QOs were Alabama and UCLA, and you might could throw Fresno in there as well that year. Georgia's QOs were Clemson and Tech.
2004: OU played Bowling Green, Houston and Oregon and went 3-0. Georgia played Tech, Marshall and Georgia Southern and went 3-0. Both teams had one quality opponent that year, in Oregon and Tech.
2005: OU played TCU, Tulsa and UCLA and went 1-2, losing to both quality opponents in TCU and UCLA. Georgia played Boise State, UL-Monroe and Tech, going 3-0. OU had two quality opponents and lost to them both, while Georgia had two and beat them both.
2006: OU played UAB, Washington, Oregon and Middle Tennessee State, going 3-1. Georgia played Colorado, Western Kentucky, Tech and UAB, going 4-0. OU's only quality opponent that year was Oregon, who beat them. Georgia's quality opponent was Tech, as Colorado was 0-3 or 0-4 coming into the game and nearly beat us.
2007: OU played North Texas, Miami, Utah State and Tulsa and went 4-0. Georgia played Oklahoma State, Western Carolina, Tech and Troy, and went 4-0.
All in all, we schedule about the same number of quality opponents from big conferences or mid-major teams that do well against the big boys. Starting in 2002 but excluding 2008, OU has scheduled 8 games against teams from major conferences and three against quality opponents (Fresno State once and TCU twice) that give the big boys fits on occasion. That leaves 11 cupcake games. Georgia has scheduled 10 games against major-conference opponents as well as three (Troy, Boise State and Marshall, who back in '04 was still a good program capable of beating big teams) who gave the big boys fits. That leaves 9 cupcake games. So if you want to quibble, Georgia's non-con schedule has actually been two games tougher than OU's in the last six years.
6) Finally, to Sooner Magic: if you want to brag about your non-con schedule, the best thing to do is WIN YOUR NON-CON GAMES!!! Starting in 2002, Georgia is (are you ready for this?) UNDEFEATED in regular-season out-of-conference games. OU is 19-3, with losses to UCLA, Oregon and Texas Christian. Granted, we haven't played UCLA, Oregon or TCU under Mark Richt, but under CMR we are undefeated against non-con opponents during the regular season and have lost only two out-of-conference games, both in bowls, both to Big East teams and both by four points or less.
