Cause for Concern? (WBB thread)

I know that we primarily talk football on this forum, but there are those of us who are rabid about all aspects of Georgia sports, and we've gotta remember that the big three on campus are:

1) Football
2) Women's gymnastics (Gym Dawgs)
3) Women's basketball (Lady Dawgs)

It's about #3 that I'm writing today. We have a fantastic team this year, with Tasha Humphrey finally living up to her potential, Angel Robinson giving us a taste of the future and my girl Ashley Houts leading the way. But the loss to Xavier and the 30-point(!) loss to Auburn really concern me.

If no one else is worried about this, let me know and I'll shut up, but I'm kind of concerned that the de facto leader of our team, Tasha Humphrey, isn't much of a leader at all. We played extremely well to start the season, but these two bumps in the last week are inexcusable. Losing to Xavier at all shouldn't happen, and losing to Auburn by 30(!!!) is ridiculous, whether a road game or a home game. Listening to the game, it was the first time I'd ever heard Jeff Dantzler give up on the game before the half.

Anyone else worried about this, or am I whistling in the dark over nothing?

It happens...long schedule, short mindsets with these kids.

I ALWAYS worry about UT, they own us.

dapolla, I try and keep up with all of the sports and activities in and around Athens. I also have some worries with your #3, think that you are on the mark.

If I might, thought I would pass this along as it is near and dear to my heart also. Our swim coach at UGA is as highly respected at what he does as MR is at what he does. Jack has done some amazing things with the UGA swimming teams, both men and women. One of the past All-Americans and at one time National Title Holder in the relays is, Paige Kearns. Local product from here in Central Florida, Rockledge to be precise.

I played football and other sports back in the day, but these swimmers and gymnists, make football practice look like a cake walk. They work so hard, and that is year round, no slacking. My son was a noted swimmer here in the State of Florida, so I can certainly appreciate the amount of work that is put in. Takes a special person to swim or enter into gymnastics competitively. Just thought I would throw that in as maybe #4. ;)

Thought some of you folks might want to see what the President of the United States had to say about some of our college athletes.

Buc I never meant to say that the \"Big Three\" were the only ones I cared about...just pointing out that Football, Women's hoops and gymnastics are the big ones in terms of ticket sales. I too follow what Coach Bauerle has been able to accomplish (I myself was a swimmer until a neck injury stopped me), along with the incredible run our Men's Tennis team has been on and the resurgence of our Women's Tennis and Golf teams, not to mention the dominance of our Men's golf team. I take my son to at least one Diamond Dawgs game a year and every year I resolve to finally go to the Lady Diamond Dawgs (maybe when my daughter gets a little older...)

So by no means was I ranking those sports in terms of importance or nearness and dearness. Solely in terms of the universal big three sports on campus. Our Swim Dawgs, Net Dawgs, Diamond Dawgs and all other teams are important and make me just as proud when we do well as the Dawgs, Lady Dawgs and Gym Dawgs do!

Universally? GOOOOOO DAWGS!!!

The loss to Auburn shocked me. Something has disrupted the chemistry of this team. Landers has done a great job over the years but can't seem to get over that final hump.
Also, the level of competition keeps getting better. I hate to use the parity word but it seems applicable.
As a kid growing up in West Georgia in the fifties I remember going to basketball games and there was nobody there. The whole town would show up for football games. I guess we've come a long way. I wish UGA would build a nice arena and get the Men's roundball on track. The best coach we had was Hugh Durham and he got the shaft.
Go Dawgs!

I agree with you average dawg. I loved Hugh. I also agree we need a better basketball facility. I just don't see it happening though. Especially, since they just remodeled the dang thing a couple of years ago.

If the Dawg faithful want to see good basketball we need to treat it like we do football. Unfortunately, I don't see it happening.

Go Dawgs!!!!
