A journalist's take

A journalist's take was created by miss_uga
This article was written by Rusi Patel. A journalist friend of mine emailed it to me and informed me that journalists all over the US are speaking out for the Dawgs.

We have had three BCS games so far, and every single one of these snoozers has allowed me to sleep soundly.

We were spoon-fed the \"Hawai'i is this year's media darling\" stories for weeks, and all it got us was the sheer and utter humiliation that that was the Sugar Bowl.

We were fed that \"Illinois has speed and power, and might pull off an upset.\"

Pass the applesauce, please.

We were told WVU had no chance—without noting that they had a pretty good defense and Rich Rodriguez didn't coach that side of the ball. Without noting that there was this guy named Pat White on offense—who can also be known as the Flash from now on.

This BCS season went downhill early. Imagine going into championship Saturday a month ago with Notre Dame at #4 instead of UGA. The #1 and #2 teams in the country lose. Who do you think Kirk Herbstreit is promoting to be in the National Championshp game then?

My point is not necessarily that UGA deserved to be in the title game. (But who the hell knows if they did? We will never get the chance to find out.)

My point is that announcers have too much control over the BCS process. College Gameday blatantly pandered for an LSU-Ohio State game over a month ago, while dismissing teams like UGA and Kansas.

Do I have a problem with the LSU-Ohio State game? No. In fact, I actually think it might be a pretty good game—and Lord knows, of all the teams clamoring for a spot in the Championshp, those two probably had the strongest arguments.

My problem is that the pandering would not have occurred if Georgia was held in the same regard as Notre Dame, USC, or Nebraska.

Announcers talking too much took a new turn in the Sugar Bowl. All throughout the pregame show, viewes had to deal with this \"Hawai'i is the team of destiny, and everyone is supposed to like them\" shtick.

Colt Brennan had a personal interest story about how he redeemed himself from his \"mistake.\" I am proud that he has been able to redeem himself as are many other people throughout the nation. I am not proud of the Fox network or Brennan failing to say what that mistake was.

Brennan broke into a woman's room and exposed his genitals to her. Don't make a personal interest story about your status as a victim if you can't state that. That story made it seem like he did nothing wrong, and was run out of the University of Colorado by mean and evil people.

Later in the game, Thom Brennaman—who should never call a college game again after referring to UGA players as \"Gators\"—started praising Hawai'i for not giving up, while at the same time calling UGA classless for still playing hard.

Thom, the team had its backups in. These are kids that never see playing time. You want them to start taking knees with ten minutes to go against the highest-scoring offense in college football?

You want them to come into the Sugar Bowl, a game they may never get the chance to play in again, and not try?

Go back to the NFL, Thom.

I am hoping for a better matchup in the Orange Bowl tonight. But, to be honest, I kind of smell a Kansas victory in impressive fashion—that team still wants to prove themselves.

GREAT article.
The Fox coverage was a joke, Fran the man's comments excluded. By the way, how does he keep all that hair at his age? Someone please let me know.
Good to see the Snake on the sideline before the game. Never been a Bama fan but always liked the Snake.

Nice article. I have to admit it really burns me when I know with out a doubt a #4 Notre Dame would have gotten the benefit of the doubt in the title game. I'm not saying we should have gone, I am saying the rules should apply to everybody.

I also agree the commentary for the Sugar Bowl was garbage. I still can't believe they hinted that we were running up the score.

All I know is I will take an 11-2 season and a Sugar Bowl victory. Especially since I was one of the naysayers here after the Tenn. loss.

Go Dawgs!!!!

Fox should never have been given the contract for the BCS bowls. Fox is a horrible entity that feeds on creating stories rather than reporting them, and Thom Brennaman's commentary was exactly that. He wasn't calling the game he was watching. He was complaining that the outcome he wanted didn't happen. Disgusting.

To hell with him. And to hell with Fox and to hell with seriously, with anyone who doesn't vote UGA number one at the end of this year. The Rose Bowl was afraid Georgia would destroy their beloved USC, so they chose Illinois. The Orange Bowl was afraid that UGA would end VT's storybook season after their horrible tragedy, so they passed over both Georgia and Missouri for supposed patsy Kansas -- who disposed of Tech anyway. Okay, so the Rose Bowl has \"traditional\" Pac-10/Big 10 matchups? So why wouldn't you put two of the best teams in the country -- UGA and OU -- in the Fiesta Bowl? Because I'm sorry, but a WVU team that just lost to Pitt in one of the worst games I've seen all year shouldn't have been pitted against a supposed national championship contender. Besides, wouldn't a better matchup have pitted WVU against VT in the Orange?

The simple fact of the matter is that we, like Baby, were put in the corner by bowl board members more concerned about protecting their commodities than about integrity, or even compelling matchups. With all of these writers saying that Georgia \"didn't play anybody in their bowl\" did they bother to notice that we beat 6 ranked teams this year, two of whom ('Bama and Florida) were ranked higher than we were at the time the game is played? That's including Hawai'i, who was JUST IN CASE YOU REMEMBER, WRITERS WHO VOTE, ranked #10 in the country and was UNDEFEATED when we massacred them in New Orleans. So we DID play somebody in our bowl, and we beat them by 31 points. Is anyone saying that West Virginia didn't play anybody in their bowl game just because they beat OU by 20 points?

So they can all kiss my hind end. Personally, I think our boys should do what Auburn did in 2004 and claim the National title and order rings.

We've done what we need to do. And look, if Ohio State beats LSU, I will back off and call them national champs. After all, they will have won their conference, had only one loss, and beaten the SEC Champions. They'd deserve it. But if LSU wins that game...then my god the AP had better give their #1 ranking to us.

GO LSU!!!! BEAT OHIO STATE, BUT ONLY BARELY, AND PLEASE LOOK BAD DOING IT!!!
