Willie's Defense

In the history of the Georgia Bulldogs football program, we have lost a game when scoring 30 or more points exactly 8 times. The first was in 1992 when we lost to Tennessee 31-34. Since then,

1994 we lost to Vandy 30-43
1995 we lost to Auburn 31-37
1997 we lost to Auburn 34-45
1999 we lost to Tech 48-51

Notice that the only time we did this in back-to-back years was in 1994-1995.

Under Willie Martinez, we have lost THREE TIMES IN TWO YEARS when scoring at least 30 points. We lost to Auburn 30-31 in 2005, to West Virginia 35-38 in the 2006 Sugar Bowl, and to Tennessee 33-51 in 2006.

Also, keep in mind that the Auburn game in 2005 was the first time under Mark Richt that we had lost a game when scoring at least 18 points.

Need any more fuel for the fire? How about the fact that this NEVER happened, even during down years, under any other coach who won a conference championship (Pop Warner, H.J. Stegeman, Kid Woodruff, Butts, Dooley)? Richt has won two conference championships and three divisional. How about the fact that until Willie came along, this had ONLY happened during what we consider the worst years in Georgia football, the Goff/Donnan years? Even Johnny Griffith never let this happen.

When you can't rely on thirty points to beat an opponent in the SEC, it's time to move your team to Nashville or Starkville, because you're a doormat now.

My worst nightmare has come to fruition. We have another Joe Kines on our hands.

I have been digitally paralyzed since the carnage wrought
by UT. The win over Vandy has relieved some of the
suffering, but the deep concerns over our defense
remain paramount in my thinking. As discussed in this
forum and elsewhere, the failures of the UGA defense are
not simply a mistake here, a missed tackle there, they
are more FUNDAMENTAL. Sideline critics though we may be,
we all seem to be tracing this malignancy to a primary
source: CWM!

We believe we have the talent to compete for a NC during
the next two years (the Jr. and Sr. year for MS). But
to actually bring that dream to fruition will require
a solid defense. Attacking, proactive, snarling,
risk-taking, ball-hawking, moving, changing, teeth-jarring,
smashmouth defense is needed here! It was born here!
It grew up here! We want it back! We need it back!

I'll donate a small amount of money into a fund to hire
Muschamp from Auburn. I would nominate the lovely Miss_uga
to hold the money and lure the unsuspecting coach from the
plains of Alabama.

I went back and looked at Gator losses when scoring at least 30 points.
The Gators have a whopping 12 losses or ties just going back to the beginning of the Spurrier era.
They breakdown as follows:
’90 – lost 30-45 vs. Florida State
’93 – lost 35-38 vs. Auburn
’94 – lost 33-36 vs. Auburn
’94 – tied 31-31 vs. Florida State (“Choke at the Doak”) Urrrrg!!!
’99 – lost 39-40 vs. Alabama
’99 – lost 34-37 vs. Michigan State (Bowl Game)
’00 – lost 35-47 vs. Mississippi State
’01 – lost 32-34 vs. Tennessee (end of season rescheduled game due to 9/11)
’02 – lost 30-38 vs. Michigan (Bowl Game)
’03 – lost 34-38 vs. Florida State
’03 - lost 33-38 vs. Miami
’04 – lost 31-38 vs. Mississippi State (Zook gets fired!)
