McGarity Is For Real . . . . Results

11 years 6 months ago - 11 years 6 months ago #52438 by Buc
David Perno loves the University of Georgia. I really appreciate that. David has been rewarded very well with a yearly salary over $400,000 annually. Looking over Perno’s total record while serving as manager, record falls short against SEC competition, over the years. Win-Loss.

Why I mention that on a board that is for the most part a football site (as most are) . . . . Greg McGarity is not going to allow coaches to continue in Athens unless they have what it takes to move forward.

His first conversation with Mark Richt seems to have set the pace. If you start your tenure at Georgia, it requires that you earn a right to continue, longevity is not guaranteed. Richt had been here for a while, Mac however was not satisfied with the way the football operation was being handled, and let Richt know that. That is good. There is a new sheriff in town.

I hope that Perno finds something that will allow him to continue to be involved in baseball. Finding a place that will guarantee $400,000 a year, might be a tough row to hoe.

Anyone feel the presence of Mac with the handling of Garner moving on? I do.

This is the type of leadership that has been missing in Athens for far too long in my opinion.

Seems to me that the Athletic Department was running in too many different directions prior to Greg McGarity returning home. There will be times when some will disagree with Mac, to be expected, have done so myself. This I do know, Mac is not looking for up and down seasons, that is in the past. Said several times, anyone that thinks that McGarity did not watch and learn under Jeremy Foley, when under his command, well . . . . Foley has not and will not allow his different sports teams to lag. All anyone has to do is check Foley's record at Florida. Don't like that statement, results matter. Mac it appears is about results, who among us can disagree with that.

Bothers me when I watch South Carolina steadily climbing the ladder in recent years, and we fall short in some areas. Their football and baseball programs are up 100%.

Many close to David Perno are upset, from what I have read on the web. Bottom line runs the company, and college athletics is based on the bottom athletic line, no different than the world that we live in outside of athletics.

McGarity can see what is going on around him from his SEC counterparts. That is a good thing. Better believe that he has the brass ones to move Georgia forward. Not making the playoffs, one of two teams in SEC baseball, not good. Pink slip. Same applies to McGarity, and he understands that.

Keep it up Athletic Director, there are some out here that approve of the changes being made in Athens.

Fourth coaching change that Greg McGarity has made since he was hired in August of 2010.

The volleyball coach was fired a few months into the 2010 season.

The women's golf coach did not have her contract renewed last year.

Gymnastics coach Jay Clark resigned under pressure last year.

Interesting reading the link below. Very similar to the post above. Checking time lines, think our opinions were first to hit the internet. Not copying anyone, nor do I feel Marc Weiszer is either. Glad to see a firm hand on the wheel in the Athletic Director's Chair.

Don't get much of the "inside scoop" . . . . my post comes from the chair that I sit in. Do enjoy reading much of what Weiszer offers.

Buc, I am a big baseball fan as well. I like Dave Perno, but I believe it was time. Mac make take some heat over this one, but it was time. Since the 2008 season, we have been very mediocre at best. We have had very good signing classes the last few years to be losing the games that we did this year. Perno had endured some very tough, heart-breaking situations with JT and CV, but still no excuse for what has happened the last 2 years. Wish Perno the best and I am sure he will land another coaching job, but truly believe for his own good, he needs a few years away from coaching.

AllDawgs5, like you, I am a big baseball fan also. Have made mention on this board before that Johnny Mize was/is my cousin. The original "Big Cat" by name in major league baseball. Hall of Fame, last stop he made was playing for Casey Stengel in the World Series on the early 50". Have quite a bit of "things" that pertain to JM.

I really believe that Perno go a bit too close to some of the players. While that is not a bad thing, it has the potential to cause problems with "some".

Know that you are busy, good thing . . . . always glad to see you back pounding the keys. :)

It was time for Perno to move on, and I have the same thoughts that you have, nothing but good wishes.

Having said that, do like Mac not letting any of the coaches get too comfortable, especially when their particular sport begins to show a lack of leadership, or whatever the reason.

If you don't believe the elite programs are run like a business, you are sadly mistaken. it is all about the results on the field. GM is the CFO of a major sports program and as stockholders (financial contributors), we expect ROI ... that is wins.

I too enjoyed going to Foley Field and watching baseball games. I am sorry DP was fired, but I have felt that since 2008 when when Fresno State defeated UGA it was the beginning of the end. We should have never lost that series.
