Coaches, Players and Ratings vs. Results

11 years 9 months ago #51794 by Buc
Still seems to be a lot of chatter on the internet about UGA’s incoming 2013 Class. Brought this thought to mind.

Georgia has gone to JAX and the past couple of years, return to Athens with wins.

Following that thought with the last three games against South Carolina. Don’t have to say a lot about the outcomes.

This is my problem . . . .
Florida has top ten, very often top five recruiting classes every year. Out recruiting us every year and we have taken the last two from them. Go figure.

Without fail over recent years, excluding a few players, Georgia has beaten South Carolina in the recruiting wars, that is if you believe all of the star ratings that the media throws against the wall to see if it sticks. Go figure.

Have always thought that the coaches that know their stuff come away with the football players they want for their programs. Don’t always get every player they want, but overall, fill the positions that need to be filled. Might not be glamorous if you don’t get that star linebacker or offensive lineman or wide receiver. Those that have coached football know that first things come first. If the team needs position players, simple math on the way to rebuilding or reloading the team is not difficult.

When I look at what was accomplished this year with our team, first thing that comes to my mind is we have a group of coaches that understand the reload, rather than the rebuild. Feeling here is that lesson was learned from previous mistakes. Numbers mean a lot when building depth, that got away from us for a period of time, won’t make that mistake again.

One example of reload . . . . Saban recruited a stable of running backs this year. Maybe Saban knows what has to be done to win championships. Many say Saban gets only the top athletes, not true, he gets anything he wants because he has a showcase full of Crystal. Lots of less than five star athletes playing for Saban/Smart.

When I look at the Georgia defense, first time in forever that I see reloading. There has been a lot of chirping about Georgia recruiting a boat load of defensive backs. Smart move from where I sit. Same could be said about the linebacker position.

This years group of players wearing the Red and Black have a very good chance of being really good, good whether they were four or five stars coming out of high school. Coaches recruited these young men, now the task begins, coaching them up.

Good Morning Buc,

Thanks for peeling the onion back another layer. Great read !

For me it goes back to my old standby! Passion for what you are doing!

Sports or business those with a passion and who truly enjoy what they are doing tend to excel.

IMO we have a mix of players and coaches who want to move our program ahead.

Three things will play a major role in our 2013 team

SECCG - toe to toe with Bama - taste of success and knowing more hard work in the same direction will bring rewards-we are on a mission

Fourth Quarter - Bowl game we bowed up and did not run out of gas-able to pull out a W

Coaching staff that can and will coach them up to a higher level

"Go Sawgs"

Go Dawgs!

yankeedawg1 . . . . Brother we are on the same page.

I would add that the first two games inspire me, tired of the talk that we don't play anyone. Schedules are schedules.

Would make this bet (if I were a betting man ;) ) and I am not the first to say this. The coaches and players know what is facing us at the beginning of 2013. Two outstanding teams, both with depth and winning programs. Same can be said about Georgia, a winning team and more depth than many want to recognize on the defense.

Coming out of Spring practice, there are going to be some bumps and bruises on our football team. It will not be like last year when the defensive side actually intimidated the offensive side. Too bad some on the defensive side did not continue that mind set through 2012. I really believe the defensive side will learn and learn quickly that they have to step up if they want playing time. Can't imagine the defensive side going against a much better offense than they will face in Athens.

You are so right about the bowl game in Orlando. In the fourth quarter, our team looked like the team that most folks thought they could be. Georgia got after Nebraska in the fourth and I would like to think that a lot of that was due to JTII and his gang.

Thanks for the comeback yd1, had begun to think that there was not a heartbeat on the board. We also know from times past that some disappear with all of their knowledge as soon as the season is over. Understandable, there are football fans and there are seasonal football fans.

Buc.....remember the old saying..."turn about fair play"??

Last spring the D kicked butt and got the O ready to play.....this year the O will be kicking the D's butts (initially anyway) and getting them ready for 2013 especially those 1st two games. Also brings to mind another old saying....."timing is everything".

Gotta like it, huh? :woohoo: :woohoo::woohoo:

wlayton, truer words have never been spoken. Turn about is fair play.

Will say this . . . . I believe that the group on defense that will represent us this year, will come along quickly. wlayton, can't put my finger on it, just that something. Maybe it is because some are saying that we will be underdogs. Notice I did not say underDawgs. This defensive team might end up being WonderDawgs.

Would also be very surprised if we don't use a lot of players on the defensive side. Much of the talent on defense is very close to game time players. We go two deep on the defensive side, will definitely conform to the earlier discussions about depth. Man, that is depth for the future. These young pups belong to Todd Grantham, meaning he had the final yes or no as far as talent and wearing the colors, his choices. Defense is loaded with speed. As growl has said, now we need to learn that Football 101 Lesson . . . . wrap'em up, no too much of that shouder "stuff".

wlayton, I do like what I "think" I see.

One more thingy . . . . Chris Wilson, bet here is that he has a big hand in "Special Teams". Special Teams come around, along with kickoffs in the endzone or beyond, this defense will be hard to move on and score having to travel that distance. Really, really hope that we can play two deep on defense and not see any fall off. That would be awesome.

Hell yeah!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Hey Buc, that reminds me......I have an old T-shirt with UGA wearing a "cape" and it was titled "Wonderdogs"......man, gotta go find that thing.

As you know, I'm a contrarian in my business so I'm with you on the D side of the ball, where most think we will be rebuilding this year. Believe our stats and points allowed will be much better this year than last's.
