I hate to speak negatively, but one is required by integrity to say what he feels (unless he decides to remain quiet). I have to agree with what UGAChemDawg wrote in another thread. Paraphrasing him, he said, “We are pretty much horrible.” Really do hate to say it, but that’s the way I see it too.
I watched most of the games on TV Saturday. I give us credit that we did defeat Vandy, and 4-3 is certainly preferable to 3-4. But as expressed elsewhere, it was Vandy, and they are just not a very good team. And it took us forever, so it seemed, to get the game in hand. I honestly saw few encouraging signs in our team.
I may be dead wrong about this (and I hope for the sake of our program I am wrong), but it seems to me that the talent level and effort of our players is not the critical, fundamental problem that is producing our present state of Bulldog football. Unfortunately, it seems to be more fundamental than that.
In watching the Arkansas/UF game, you got the feeling during the first half that AR came to play, and they knew what they were doing. As much as it may pain me to say it, we KNOW UF knows what UF is doing. They play good football on both sides of the ball, and they win. They’re not perfect, but they are good. Similarly, AR played a great game and really deserved to win the game. But the point is, both teams played well and were obviously well-coached. In watching the Alabama/SC game, one cannot help but be impressed with the discipline of the Crimson Tide. They are not very flashy, are they?
Boy, do they carry out assignments. SC played pretty well and hung in the game, but they were outmatched physically and in talent. The things that Bama does, it does very well! They are very well-coached.
They challenge everything on defense
everything!
Did you miss that last statement? They challenge everything on defense
everything!
I don’t doubt that Florida and Bama have the best talent in the SEC (and probably the country). But do they have talent that is so much better than UGA, that their teams this year are revered, and our’s is reviled? Okay, both teams have better talent than UGA, but is their talent level far and away better than ours? So much so, that they are perceived to be “in the clouds”, and we are perceived to be “mired in mediocrity”? I think not. I think it is not a case of vast talent differential, but one of coaching differential. That is my personal, honest opinion. And I think the crux of it lies in the philosophical approach of our defensive coaching philosophy and methods. We have to start there to fix the program. CWM must be replaced “last year”. It’s not time for him to go; it’s way past time!
