If I'm Damon Evans and UGA (who notoriously hate to spend money), I'm looking west, but farther west than Alabama. I'm looking at Monroe, LA, at Troy Reffett, the first-year DC at UL-Monroe. Last night, this guy held Arkansas State -- who nearly beat Iowa 11 days ago -- to 263 yards of total offense, and less than a yard per carry on 34 attempts and forced 3 turnovers. Perhaps even more telling is that -- despite their high score -- he held Texas to 363 yards of total offense and ALSO forced 3 turnovers in that 59-20 loss. His style of defense is a swarming, get-to-the-ball style, and he emphasizes speed. Every pundit out there says that the team's turnaround is due to his scheme, and there's no way he's very high on the radar. Not a chance. Imagine what he could do with SEC- and UGA-caliber athletes.
Kirby Smart, Tommy Tuberville, Will Muschamp, etc...none of these guys are realistic prospects, because ALL of them will be head coaches VERY soon. The only high-profile guy out there I'd say go after is Charlie Strong, because apparently the Gods (and racism) won't let him get any head coaching offers. If we're proactive and go after a guy like Reffett, or like Shane Beamer at Va Tech (if his dad would ever let him get away...then again, Bill Dooley WAS the head coach there before Frank...), then we can keep him here. Kirby's here for three years tops before he's a head coach at the next SEC school that fires its head coach after a 5-7 season.
