We had a few blowouts in 1980, as well as a few close games. A good team can win both. And we
weren't clearly the nation's best in 1980, just the only undefeated unbeaten and untied team at the end. At least two (non-major) polls gave the 1980 championship to Notre Dame (before the bowls were played, of course), and there are a good many people who will say that Pitt could have murdered us. It doesn't matter, because we didn't lose or tie, won the Sugar Bowl and were awarded the national title.
In terms of a playoff, good luck. The NCAA has no power to mandate anything in FBS competition, and the bowl pot is far too sweet. And no matter what these idiot talking heads say, we don't
need a playoff system. We want one, but we don't
need one any more than we did in 1980. We don't need a national champion in football. We just want one. It isn't professional sports, folks, and the bowl system is actually the best way to keep it that way.
