Last week the
SpeareCam recorded the following conversation which took place deep within the secluded offices of the coaching staff on the storied Athens campus. Due to technical and confidential issues yet to be resolved, audio and video of this conversation are not currently available. A written transcript has been posted for exclusive review on this forum. CMB = Coach Mike Bobo.
CMR: “ Mike, this is a warning order. I want us to be thinking about inserting another offensive scheme into our arsenal. This will not be a replacement for anything that we now use; it will be in addition to it.”
CMB: “OK. What is your time line? You want to use it this fall?”
CMR: “Yeah; I want to be prepared to use it on a limited basis by the second or third game.”
CMB: “All right, what’s the concept?”
CMR: “I want to employ a spread offense using Logan (Gray) at QB and Caleb (King) as the RB. You can also run sets with no RB and 5 receivers. My intention will be to use it no more than two or three sets of downs in a game.
My thinking here is both tactical and strategic. If we can be effective using this scheme, it will benefit us in the game in which we use it, and it will add another scheme that opposing defenses have to prepare for each week. Additionally, it will enhance the development of LG, CK, Dontavius (Jackson) and more of our WR’s. It will also provide a little insurance in the event that MS and/or KM go to the NFL in ’09. Bringing these young guys into games earlier in the year just gives them that much more game experience for next season. Depending on our pre-season evaluations, we may have Aaron (Murray) and Zach (Mettenberg) learn the system as well.
LG has already shown an ability to run this thing in both HS, and last year in our practices and preparations for UF and UH in the Sugar Bowl. You recall that we were both impressed with his work. At times, I thought he was as good as Tebow.
In fall practices, LG can work w/ CK, Dontavius (Jackson) and our #2 set of receivers to refine the plays we want to use, and it will not detract that much from the #1 offense practice time. Using a baseball analogy, our running game is a fastball, Stafford’s passing game is a curve ball, and the, the
Redspread is a change up. Yeah, that’s not a bad name for this offense.
Redspread sound good?”
CMB: “Yea, that does sound pretty good. OK, I think I see where you’re coming from, and I’m on board. I’ll start working on plays immediately. This reminds me a little bit of how you used DJ (Shockley) w/ David Greene, but without the spread.”
