What You Think?

#1 2 years, 2 months ago
Spent most of my retired day watching video on UGA hirings, signings and came to a couple of conclusions that suit my way of thinking.

This has been said many times since the release of WM. There is a new found spirit that not only has raised the \"spirit\" in fans, but seems to be coaches and players alike. Still wonder how we ever got to this point, it does however happen to other schools as well. Examples, Tennessee, Alabama, rather than name every school in the SEC, will say all have had their moments.

Watching Coach Rodney Garner and Coach Richt together, really got my \"spirit\" up. Coach Garner is as solid as one human being can be. Especially when it comes to his character and expertise. I do not for a minute believe that the sole reason he is still in Athens is because he is a great recruiter, the man can coach. One of the reasons I say that, do not believe the new regime would have kept anyone on the defensive side that did not understand what \"going all out meant.\" Coach Garner is talking about being aggressive and making sure that the opposing QB has \"dancing feet\". Coach Garner, thank you for being such a huge part of UGA football. Not overlooked by many that appreciate quality folks.

Coach Bobo. Don't know. Watched him closely and tried to get a feel for just exactly what it is he is looking for, and forward to. Personally did not get a clear message. He spoke a lot about our QB's and their lack of experience and not giving up the football. He tried real hard to be a coach that wanted the three QB's to think that they had a chance at starting for UGA. This is the same coach that basically played one QB last year for an 8/5 season. I listened intently to all of the smoke, just came away with the feeling that he is on shaky ground. Coach Bobo made a direct statement that Coach Richt was a QB coach and basically said that the offensive side of the ball would have more \"helping hands\". Coach Bobo is one of us, but I for one am not sure that he is in the right position as Offensive Coordinator. I feel secure without one snap at this point in the upcoming season that Coach Grantham is the right coordinator for UGA on the other side.

It looks to me that the practice days ahead are going to not only open eyes on the defensive side of the ball . . . . the offensive side could and should learn a great lesson from a proven bunch of defensive coaches, coaches that have been through the trials and tribulations of playing not only on Saturday, but SUNDAY as well. I believe that this \"new bunch\" of coaches will improve our offensive side . . . . or present the problems that truly exist with the coaching on the \"other side\".

Coach Bobo, you have talent on your side of the ball. Can you match Coaches Grantham, Belin, Lakatos, Garner and others . . . . . just asking . . . .

Remember folks, one persons opinion. . . .

With all the OL coming back, Bobo has no excuse for failure.
There should be as much excitement on offense as there is on defense.
Coach Richt. the ball is in your court.

With the OL and RB's we are gonna have. CMB is going to be on the hotseat. I know he is breaking in a new QB, but like Buc said it was part of his decision to play JC all last year for a 8-5 Bulldog team. I'm not saying that AM and ZM was ready, but we could have found out real quick if Logan was! I hope that CMR really spends some time on that side of the the ball this year.

Buc I totally agree with you on CTG. I am not worried about him at all. I think we will see a different team on defence next year, even without the guys he wants to recruit. I also think that CTG will help CMB become a better coach and game planner! Just my opinion. As always Go Dawgs!

Buc

I agree
Some guys are good position coaches but do not make good coordinator coaches
Some good coordinator coaches do not make good head coaches

I just don't get that good feeling about Bobo as a coordinator - we'll just have to see if he improves this year - we need to start guys who want it the most no matter who they are - we need to be playing a lot of guys all the time to give them a chance to show what they can do in a real game - this red shirting means that if they are really good - you will only have them for 2 years and they are gone - I feel like Grantham will play the best no matter who they are - you will continuely have to prove yourself to be good enough to play

Sounds like in this article that perhaps Bobo knows that its show time or else - we'll see if it's just talk

Bobo on fallout from Dogs’ five-loss season: ‘I think it’s lit a fire in everybody’
1:00 am February 26, 2010, by Tim Tucker
ATHENS — Georgia’s offensive coaches, unlike three of their defensive counterparts, kept their jobs after last year’s five-loss season. But the offensive staff feels the heat, too.
Listen to offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, talking to reporters in a conference room at the Butts-Mehre building Thursday:
“Anytime you struggle as a football team and lose five games — which is not acceptable, we know it’s not acceptable — you’re going to soul-search for what we can do better. The first thing we can do better is block better, take care of the ball better and not turn it over, and [by doing those things] we’re going to be better immensely as an offense. Those [things] sound simple, but basically [it's] getting back to basics of what this program and this offense was built on when we first got here — a good run game, good play-action game and those fundamental basics of playing good football and taking care of the football.
“You’re always searching for answers, and anytime you lose it’s, you know, the-sky-is-falling. But you just got to go back to taking care of the little things and getting better at each aspect and coaching your position better. . . .
“We’ve had change. We’ve had turnover. We struggled last year. Eight and five. But sometimes that’s good: You need to be on the fire. And I think it’s lit a fire in everybody.”
In a half-hour meeting with beat reporters one week before the start of spring practice, Bobo stressed that the starting quarterback job will be a “wide open” competition among Logan Gray, Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger. Bobo vowed that the winner of the job must demonstrate that he’ll protect the football. There’s no stomach for another 17-interception season, as Georgia had last fall.
“We got to play better at the quarterback position,” Bobo said. “I think the No. 1 way we can play better is take care of the football, and that is going to be our main emphasis at the position this year.”
Bobo acknowledged that inexperienced quarterbacks –- all three candidates are inexperienced –- tend to be susceptible to mistakes. But “we just have to do a better job of managing that position and managing those mistakes this year where [last] year we probably didn’t,” he said.

– Logan Gray might not win the QB job, but he definitely has won Bobo’s respect. “The thing about this kid is, all he’s ever wanted to do is help Georgia and play and compete,” Bobo said. “And that’s what he wants to do this spring at quarterback. If he finds himself not in the mix, where he’s not going to be the guy [at] quarterback, he wants the opportunity to play another position. And that’s it. It’s been a great attitude. It hasn’t been, ‘Hey, I want to play this, Coach, and if not I’m transferring.’ He’s, like, ‘Coach, I want to play and get on the field and help this team, I love it here, I love the teammates, I love Georgia.’ You got to love kids like that.”

I certainly feel the same excitement and anticipation as everyone on this forum but I also recommend to everyone to be patient this year in particular. There ARE going to be some growing pains. Grantham is the man and will make our D top ten again.....you can take it to the bank.....but this year will be a transition year with a different learning curve for these kids. They'll \"get it\" but there will be many mistakes and miscues....count on that as well.

The offensive side of the ball will be no different in my mind. AM also is THE man but he is going to have to learn \"on the job\". He will be exciting, dynamic etc. but WILL make mistakes. I'm also not convinced or confident yet on our RB's. They need to step it up to a new level, which I believe they can.....but when?

All in all, I'm just saying that this year we'll see MUCH improvement.....excitement.....mistakes.....great players making great plays etc. but feel we are still a year away from becoming a CONSISTENT dominant force nationally.

Just my opinion.

Buc & wLayton - wise words... I think if we see the effort to improve each game and reduce greatly the dumb flags that we can deal with the OJT for our QB and defense as they learn. I agree we are a year away from head to head with Bama/Fla. However I also feel it is possible for us to get to a higher rated bowl game this year. Go Dawgs

Georgia Bulldogs Side Bar

AJC - Bulldog Beat

  • NCAA golf and tennis underway at UGA, softball on Friday

ATHENS — I’m over here in the press box at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex watching the No. 6-seeded Georgia women take on 11th-seeded Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championships. The Lady Bulldogs won the doubles point, so it’s 1-0 and Georgia is up a set at all six singles positions.

Georgia Tech’s women’s team played earlier today and lost to No. 9 California 4-0. That ends the Yellow Jackets’ season at 16-12. The men get underway tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I’ll take this opportunity to catch you up on some other news happening in and around Athens and UGA...

  • UGA golfers hopes to ride wave of good karma through NCAA regionals

ATHENS — The NCAA Men’s Golf Regional at the UGA Golf Course is underway today and the Bulldogs are feeling good about advancing to the NCAA Championships.

And why shouldn’t they? There has been a lot of good karma oozing out of the Bulldogs’ clubhouse  at the Boyd Golf Center here lately.

University of Georgia golfers or alums have been winning tournaments all over the place for the past year or so, including those played right there off their back porch. Two weeks ago Hudson Swafford holed a bunker shot on the 72nd hole and shot a final-round 62 to...

  • Florida influence apparent in managment style of UGA’s Greg McGarity

ATHENS – There are some nervous coaches around Georgia’s athletic department these days. That tends to happen when the coach of perennial top 10 program abruptly resigns the week after finishing 11th.

Georgia gymnastics coach Jay Clark offered his resignation shortly after meeting with UGA athletic director Greg McGarity on May 4 and it served as an overture to his staff. Clark had two years remaining on a five-year contract he signed when he succeeded ultra-successful head coach Suzanne Yoculan in 2009.

The Gym Dogs weren’t awful under Clark, not by a long stretch. But they fell well short of the standards...

  • No. 2 seed Georgia ready again to rock NCAA tennis championships

ATHENS — For a little while there, the horrifying thought of not being able to play in the NCAA Championships while hosting them entered the minds of the Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday. But just as quickly, the No. 3-ranked and No. 2-seeded Bulldogs put that notion to rest and steamrolled Florida State in singles to advance to this week’s Round of 16.

Georgia (25-2) lost the doubles point in its second-round match against Florida State on Sunday afternoon. But in the matter of an hour it was clear the Bulldogs weren’t in mid-stumble toward a face plant. The Bulldogs quickly regained...
