TOPIC: Get Thee Behind Me, Saban!

Get Thee Behind Me, Saban!

#1 2 years, 11 months ago
Oh, boy. Alabama can't go ten good years without severe academic/athletic probation, can it? Way to go, Shula/Saban!

sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4250596

Looks like the Tide'll be vacating at least ten and up to twenty-one wins from 2005-2007. Too bad they won't be vacating the slaughterfest they put on us last year, though...

Sad part of the NCAA ruling . . . .

To their credit, the Tide appears to have avoided a postseason and television ban and loss of scholarships as the NCAA has trended recently towards vacating victories over other forms of punishment.

Hurts the program more in my opinion when they have to give up the scholarships.

NCAA places Alabama football program on probation
Posted Jun 11, 2009 3:06 PM
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -The NCAA has placed Alabama's football program and 15 other of the school's athletic teams on three years probation for major violations due to misuse of free textbooks.
The NCAA's Committee on Infractions said Thursday the football team must vacate an unspecified number of wins in which any of seven players took part during 2005-2007. The university identified the seven as \"intentional wrongdoers.\"
The NCAA said that 201 student-athletes in the 16 sports, including men's basketball, obtained \"impermissible benefits\" by using their scholarships to obtain free textbooks for other students. It also found the university guilty of \"failure to monitor.\"
The university was ordered to pay a $43,900 fine.
(This version CORRECTS Alabama will vacate wins not forfeit them)

Vacating victories does absolutely NOTHING to punish the school. Everybody knows that they won the games. The money hurts, sure, but UA pays Saban $8 mil a year, so which hurts more? Why not hand down a REAL penalty, like loss of scholarships or TV coverage? That affects their athletic department MUCH more heavily.

Of course, if this were happening at Ball State or Troy, they'd lose bowl privileges and ten scholarships for the next five years. The NCAA knows which side its bread is buttered on...damn shame...

Of course if this were Vandy or Kentucky it wouldnt even make headlines. But because Bama went 12-2 last year the magnifying glass gets alot stronger. If this were UGA(or for me Fla) the punishment would fit the crime. And dont try to be naive and say that this doesnt happen at UGA or FLA or any other university, these type of things go unnoticed all the time.

gs, don't think anyone wants their university to be caught up in the cheating business. Maybe you are right about feelings, probably so. Just need this quote from you explained or expounded on. . . . .

these type of things go unnoticed all the time.

Before you answer, hope that you have FACTS to back the above statement up. Not being ugly, just calling a gator out on one comment.

wlayton, \"There you go again\" . . . .

Sometimes you make too much sense . . .

I kind of like gs, just take exception to this . . .

And dont try to be naive and say that this doesnt happen at UGA or FLA or any other university,

Go along with dapolla on this. Seems to be coming up too often with Bama. Still don't understand why Bama did not lose scholarships. Folks basically care about the \"right now\", what happened 5, 10 years ago, does not register for the most part with those that love football. Think gs is a stand up person, we will soon see. GO YOU HAIRY DAWGS!

Buc I dont take that as being ugly at all. Facts are what make the world go round. Well I went to my pledged University, and had a sports related major, i was fortunate enough to get to know some of the players very well. Even roomed with an unamed safety. In hanging out with players and seeing certain items pop up(new phones, watches, shoes) on a regular basis, and you could get the players at a weak moment(intoxicated). I could ask where these items came from, knowing that they, or there family didnt have the means to buy them. They would just smile and say that it was taken care of. I may be way off in thinking that UGA has doen anything like this, CMR is definately a different breed of cat than UM, but recriuts alot of times come from poor situations and sometimes there decision is based on the highest bidder. Now I know that CMR would never knowingly participate in that(I mean that seriously, he is a truely honest man) but boosters and fans can do this unknowingly to the coach or anyone. So that is my only point, and I only have Fla facts to back that up, but I cant help but think that it goes on in other Universities.

Georgia Bulldogs Side Bar

AJC - Bulldog Beat

  • NCAA golf and tennis underway at UGA, softball on Friday

ATHENS — I’m over here in the press box at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex watching the No. 6-seeded Georgia women take on 11th-seeded Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championships. The Lady Bulldogs won the doubles point, so it’s 1-0 and Georgia is up a set at all six singles positions.

Georgia Tech’s women’s team played earlier today and lost to No. 9 California 4-0. That ends the Yellow Jackets’ season at 16-12. The men get underway tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I’ll take this opportunity to catch you up on some other news happening in and around Athens and UGA...

  • UGA golfers hopes to ride wave of good karma through NCAA regionals

ATHENS — The NCAA Men’s Golf Regional at the UGA Golf Course is underway today and the Bulldogs are feeling good about advancing to the NCAA Championships.

And why shouldn’t they? There has been a lot of good karma oozing out of the Bulldogs’ clubhouse  at the Boyd Golf Center here lately.

University of Georgia golfers or alums have been winning tournaments all over the place for the past year or so, including those played right there off their back porch. Two weeks ago Hudson Swafford holed a bunker shot on the 72nd hole and shot a final-round 62 to...

  • Florida influence apparent in managment style of UGA’s Greg McGarity

ATHENS – There are some nervous coaches around Georgia’s athletic department these days. That tends to happen when the coach of perennial top 10 program abruptly resigns the week after finishing 11th.

Georgia gymnastics coach Jay Clark offered his resignation shortly after meeting with UGA athletic director Greg McGarity on May 4 and it served as an overture to his staff. Clark had two years remaining on a five-year contract he signed when he succeeded ultra-successful head coach Suzanne Yoculan in 2009.

The Gym Dogs weren’t awful under Clark, not by a long stretch. But they fell well short of the standards...

  • No. 2 seed Georgia ready again to rock NCAA tennis championships

ATHENS — For a little while there, the horrifying thought of not being able to play in the NCAA Championships while hosting them entered the minds of the Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday. But just as quickly, the No. 3-ranked and No. 2-seeded Bulldogs put that notion to rest and steamrolled Florida State in singles to advance to this week’s Round of 16.

Georgia (25-2) lost the doubles point in its second-round match against Florida State on Sunday afternoon. But in the matter of an hour it was clear the Bulldogs weren’t in mid-stumble toward a face plant. The Bulldogs quickly regained...
