TOPIC: Fire Willie Martinez

Fire Willie Martinez

#1 3 years, 6 months ago
I am writing this with 5 minutes left in the Kentucky game. Whether we win or lose, we must fire Willie Martinez after the game or at the end of the season.

This makes the THIRD STRAIGHT GAME in which opponents have scored at least 38 points. Has that ever happened? It's the fourth game this season.

If we lose this game, it will make the fifth game under CWM where we have scored 30 points and still lost. Under Brian Van Gorder, we never lost a game in which we scored at least 18 points. Compare those stats, if you will.

This is sickening. This is NOT the way a Georgia team is supposed to play defense. Period. I'm done forgiving the guy. I don't care if he holds Tech, Auburn and our bowl opponent to a combined total of 10 points. He's FIRED. FIRED. FIRED.

I have been trying to be conservative with the fire WM rhetoric but at this point I have to agree.

The D is soft. We are fortunate our offense is playing lights out this season.

Well said Dapolla and I am usually one to get on here and defend coaches to the end, but you are absolutely right. My exact words at least 12 times during this game were, \"Martinez has to go\"! Along with some other choice words not suitable for our forum.

How can yall say that about poor poor willie... that was a top 5 team we played today with exceptional talent. I mean they had been in the top 5 recruiting classes the last 5 years. Outstanding players and coaching staff. OK, I've woken up from my delusional out-of-mind nap. I agree he must go, I've been saying that ever since the Auburn game in 04!! I cringe every time he rushes 3 and drops 8. I'd love to have some of those tickets to watch the game from the sidelines, but I'm afraid I'd whack poor ol willie with a wiffle ball bat after every stupid call he makes. He'd need to coach wearing a helmet!!!

Unfortunately I agree. I usually try to denounce the \"fire the coach\" plan, but i think in this case its needed. I have stuck by Coach Martinez for a while now, but there comes a time when you have to do something different. Coach Martinez REFUSES to play man coverage. If we had dropped a safety into the box and played man against Bama, LSU, and today against Kentucky, they would not have been able to move the ball. LSU has no pass offense, Kentucky's longest pass came to a tight end in the fourth qtr.. besides that it was a 5 yard hitch. Against Bama, we would have been better to stop the run and could have played much closer. As for Florida... I hate to say it, but they are just better than us right now. He insists on playing cover 2 zone. We have the tallent to play man coverage. We could have played man and spy the KY quarterback and they wouldn't have been able to score 17! Im sick of watching our INCREDIBLY tallented defense wasted on a week cover 2 zone that doesn't work because we are too small up the middle to make it work! WE ARE A SMALL, BUT FAST DEFENSE! Teams can gash us up the middle if we just play conservative! If we had Mount Cody we it would be different! We have great tackles, but by most accounts, they are undersized... but fast! We need to formulate a defense to utilize the speed and depth we have at our defensive positions, and that isn't to sit back in cover 2.

How many players who were starters before game 1 are not on the field right now?

We still have enough tallent to make up for that. That was one of our strong points at the beginning of the year. Our depth has dwindled but we are still 3 deep at every position except safety.

Our defense has more holes than swiss cheese in the Vatican (holy swiss...holey swiss...get it??? eh, never mind...) WM is to Georgia Defense what Jim Donnan was to Georgia Football. Hey, Willie, the Tennessee job is open, nudge nudge wink wink.

Georgia Bulldogs Side Bar

AJC - Bulldog Beat

  • NCAA golf and tennis underway at UGA, softball on Friday

ATHENS — I’m over here in the press box at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex watching the No. 6-seeded Georgia women take on 11th-seeded Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championships. The Lady Bulldogs won the doubles point, so it’s 1-0 and Georgia is up a set at all six singles positions.

Georgia Tech’s women’s team played earlier today and lost to No. 9 California 4-0. That ends the Yellow Jackets’ season at 16-12. The men get underway tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I’ll take this opportunity to catch you up on some other news happening in and around Athens and UGA...

  • UGA golfers hopes to ride wave of good karma through NCAA regionals

ATHENS — The NCAA Men’s Golf Regional at the UGA Golf Course is underway today and the Bulldogs are feeling good about advancing to the NCAA Championships.

And why shouldn’t they? There has been a lot of good karma oozing out of the Bulldogs’ clubhouse  at the Boyd Golf Center here lately.

University of Georgia golfers or alums have been winning tournaments all over the place for the past year or so, including those played right there off their back porch. Two weeks ago Hudson Swafford holed a bunker shot on the 72nd hole and shot a final-round 62 to...

  • Florida influence apparent in managment style of UGA’s Greg McGarity

ATHENS – There are some nervous coaches around Georgia’s athletic department these days. That tends to happen when the coach of perennial top 10 program abruptly resigns the week after finishing 11th.

Georgia gymnastics coach Jay Clark offered his resignation shortly after meeting with UGA athletic director Greg McGarity on May 4 and it served as an overture to his staff. Clark had two years remaining on a five-year contract he signed when he succeeded ultra-successful head coach Suzanne Yoculan in 2009.

The Gym Dogs weren’t awful under Clark, not by a long stretch. But they fell well short of the standards...

  • No. 2 seed Georgia ready again to rock NCAA tennis championships

ATHENS — For a little while there, the horrifying thought of not being able to play in the NCAA Championships while hosting them entered the minds of the Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday. But just as quickly, the No. 3-ranked and No. 2-seeded Bulldogs put that notion to rest and steamrolled Florida State in singles to advance to this week’s Round of 16.

Georgia (25-2) lost the doubles point in its second-round match against Florida State on Sunday afternoon. But in the matter of an hour it was clear the Bulldogs weren’t in mid-stumble toward a face plant. The Bulldogs quickly regained...
