TOPIC: who should wear number 1

I hope they are all good enough that the Coach can put their names in a hat and just pick one as far as that goes. So its six of one and half dozen of the other for me as long as the job gets done. They all have some work to do cause they are all real good. I think we are real lucky to be in this position with running backs, now to get a line that can open some big holes consistently. Should give Gurley the #1 and change IC to # 1/2...

I was one of the biggest bashers of IC at the end of the season and looking back, it probably wasn't completely fair. First off, Orson Charles is probably one of the best judges of character on the team and if he says IC was legitimately hurt and saw how competitive he was as his roommate this past year, I'm inclined to believe him.

Fact of the matter is, doesn't matter if you're a true freshman or a redshirt senior, being the feature back in the SEC is about as close as it comes to toting the rock in the NFL. Trent Richardson was the class of the SEC this year and even he couldn't do it completely on his own...having Eddie Lacey to spell him every once in a while I'm sure did wonders for his overall production this year.

For as great of a DGD as Richard Samuel is, the truth is we came into the season leaning on a true freshman to be our only real threat on the ground and it caught up with us. Again, if OC says Crowell's head/heart's in the right place, I think we should all hope that he comes back with a full season/off-season of SEC strength and conditioning, film study, practice, and takes the starting spot for next year with little competition from Marshall/Gurley. Make Crowell our "Trent Richardson" and let Marshall/Gurley fill the "Eddie Lacey" spot by committee. Any way you slice it, I feel MUCH better about our stable of backs coming into 2012...let's just hope Friend gets the big uglies up front in shape to open up some lanes for 'em.

I don't want to be a smart-butt, but I think no running back should have the #1 jersey. I may be wrong but I grew up with running backs having the numbers 20-40 on their jerseys. But that's just me having grown up in the 70s.

I know this is a new time and all, so to each its own.

It doesn't bother me all that much, but I hear ya...

But I would note that the uniform rules are more stringent in the NFL than NCAA

The NCAA rules are very simple...
Backs 1-49 Snapper 50-59 Guard 60-69 Tackle 70-79 End 80-99, and anyone else can have
any number between 1 and 99.

The NFL rules that began in the 70's mandate QB's 1-19, RB's 20-49, Wr's 10-19 or 80-89,
etc etc.

I don't think it's ever been as stringent and rigid in NCAA as it is in the pros.

I too have been very tough on this young man. I was expecting IC to come in and be the next great tailback at UGA. When I started seeing signs that was not going to happen last year, I became irritated at IC. I wanted it so bad, not for his sake, but for mine. I want those with special talents to use them to the best of their ability. I have been envious of him for not meeting my expectations. I felt he was hiding behind injuries. That was wrong.

I still have concerns about his dedication to the team and his self-destructive actions, but that will work itself out. I have had a change of heart. I now understand why CMR stated that he loved him when asked why he was suspended and not playing. IC is a young man with many high expectations upon his shoulders. I hope he has a change of heart and learns how to be a team player and eventually a team leader.
